Ok, I've been cruising through a few tuning sites, trying to decide what my first actual mod will be. I've narrowed it down to 2 options...
1. B&M Short Shifter kit (ECS Tuning) $149.99
http://www.ecstuning.com/stage/edpd/pagebuild_v2.cgi?make=Volkswagen&engine=2.0&model=Golf%20IV&submodel=&category=Drivetrain&subcategory=Short%20Shifters
2. Anso Silverline Exhaust (ECS Tuning) $299.99
http://www.ecstuning.com/stage/edpd/pagebuild_v2.cgi?make=Volkswagen&engine=2.0&model=Golf%20IV&submodel=&category=Exhaust&subcategory=Ansa
Any opinions or advice?

I would go with the Diesel Geek SS kit

this kit has just gotten better and better and is worth every penny. VERY well made!
I don't know much about the exhaust for your car tho.

Actually, I think I do need one. Damn temp guage went haywire this morning coming back from Awful Waffle. Shot up to max then dropped to nothing....hasn't moved since.

You can actually use both the B&M kit and the DG kit. The B&M replaces the shifter in the car (the piece you actually tocuh when shifting) and the DG replaces the shift lever at the transmission.
I've been using the B&M shifter and the shift lever from an Audi TT for over 3 years now and am very happy with it. Shifts are crisp and short and the B&M piece feels real solid. My only reccommendation is to get the DG with the side-to-side reduction option (if there is one). The TT lever is great 1st-4th gear but 5th still feels like I'm reaching for the glovebox.
I can show how to use your factory knob with the B&M kit as well, if you're interested.

Interesting. May try that route. How much extra will the DG kit set me back? B&M I can get for $149.

Well, I think I will go ahead and get the B&M kit from ECS Tuning, then save up for the DG kit and a few other goodies. I'd like to see how the B&M preforms alone before I go into massive amounts of shifter mods. Thank god you can bookmark websites for future reference. :D
Ok, second question. What does anyone know about Weitec suspension kits?

Of all the mk4 ss I have ever driven Rob's is by far the best. What ever it costs it is worth it imo.

I'm going to have a weitec kit for sale here very soon...like in the next week. I cant grab that link cause I'm at work but I have the tx adjustable kit. I'll have my car there next thursday so even if you arent interested in mine, you can get a ride to see if you like the comfort/stiffness. I love mine, but just ran into a slammin deal on another setup.

thats exactly what I was about to say. Its a short throw but lacks the notchiness of a lot of ss out there, including my dieselgeek.

Sweet. Though is there a difference in the 2dr GTI setup and the 4df Golf setup? I've seen several H&R and Eibach kits that specify which model they fit. Does this apply to the Weitec kit?

How much are you asking for it and who can I get to install it? I don't have any tools at the house anymore.
