the worse day ive had working on the car in a loooooonnnnnggg time
today was a disaster
i have 3 exhaust leaks due to a suck arse vband clamp aka *the devil*..vbands are one time use..maybe 2..maybe 3..if you take it on/off more than 3 times buy a new clamp
a broken bolt and a lost bolt for downpipe>downpipe connection
and a 65mm band clamp off a touareg...2.5" is 63.5mm..i thought itd squeeze down the other 1.5mm..nope...about .5mm short :smack:
oh well..whatever..ill get it taken care off this week...cali this coming up weekend/next week and h2o in less than 2 weeks
this first mock up was way too long..still a tad too long but i said eff it and put it on anyways...and to think..i made ~393chp w/ the stock downpipe
do not try this @ home

holdup...wait a fkn minute. You've had that piece of shit dp section the whole time. I'm callin you out...SANDBAGGER:grineyes:
Youre gonna make me resort to extreme measures during the h20 runs.
I'm thinking vband off the exhaust right before the muffler.
Slip the muffler off and throw it in the back of the car:gt-ogb-spank:
btw...that welding table pwnz

everyone keeps a few tricks up their sleeve ;)

and i welded in the grass...the "table" was just for pics

ordered a 2.5" band clamp from summit this morning...i didnt want a touareg part on my car anyways :p
have to order a new vband as soon as it becomes 8am on the west coast
and i have to find the lost bolt or buy a new one
:gt-bb-chongin:
and minus all the exhaust leaks..spool is a lot smoother and i can feel an increase in power during spool as well

is that flex core?

its flux core and yes it is
side note..vwauditech on vortex mentioned he backs timing down some to help increase egt's/spool...said on his 2.0 16v w/ 30r he takes 10deg's out from 3-4k
i backed timing down 3deg w/ custom code and got 1 and a half of my exhaust leaks fixed...1 and a half more to go
spool is pretty decent now...i need to back boost down some..i think im going to keep it ~20psi for daily..im getting ~10psi @ ~4k now..i havent really ripped it the past couple days but by the looks of it..w/ a good boost controller i should see 20psi fairly quickly..relatively speaking of course

damn..I get 14 by 4K and you've got a much larger snail. Hoping that an ebc in the future will get that down a bit.
I did read that post by vwauditech...and I really figured that increasing timing (or atleast having atdc higher at a point) would bring up egts and decrease spool. If you have timing too high too low and it starts pulling you may end up with less timing...and that should tell you that you are running too much timing.
Am I way off base here?

who?
to be honest i didnt know lower timing increased egt's either
the o/p on vortex said he was trying to get spool better...said he increased timing +3 deg's...no logs...posted back a little while later said he increased timing 3.75 more deg's so he was @ a total of +6.75deg..said that actually made spool worse
timing up top makes power but i really need(ed) a better spool...the d/p helped but i would still like a little more...im def not taking out 10degs but if i can take out 3deg and make power a little earlier it might help w/ power up top only because it gets to build power for a longer rpm range...if that makes sense...i could be way off base there as well though too...oh..and iirc..the 307whp was @ -3.75deg
whatever it takes for that ride up to md ;) :gt-ogb-spank: :D

as far as the who...I wasnt referring to anyone in particular but I have seen worse numbers running higher timing on my car. I suppose you have to find that sweet spot where it is happy pulling a tiny bit all the way around instead of pulling a gob right before spool...that could definitely hurt and thats prolly why he backs down timing in that area...if I lost timing during spool I'd almost always lose it all the way through the band.
eh...it makes sense but it only sense that increased timing makes better spool and better power all around, there is no downside because you are using your a/f to its full potential.
I see that timing is going to be a little bit of a challenge w/ my car. At 18psi, with the fmic and the meth, I'm still pulling timing(usually 2-3, but sometimes 6). Honestly at that low of boost, I didnt expect to see any at all so I'm thinking of going with two meth nozzles: one before the tb and one where the brake booster vacuum line went to(between cyl. 2 & 3). On the 28r I hardly had any timing pull at 23psi w/out the fmic...so this baffles me a little. But I'll just add more meth and see what happens.

later timing raises egts for sure. I had a melted k04 from an A4 to prove it. Be careful with that. That being said you may see better midrange from it. The car will only retard timing to save itself from knock and will sacrifice itself on the other side and the egts can get UGLY. The S4 has a egt sensor in each exhaust manifold right befor the turbo but iirc the 1.8 has nothing. The S4 will go into limp mode for way to high egts but I have never seen it on my car.

i should have worded that better...the "too high too low" together didnt make sense to me...so i just picked a word from the "who, what, where, when, and why" selection and went w/ it :p
anyways...i paid a little closer attention to my gauge this morning...in 3rd gear under light throttle i had 10psi right @ 4k...only saw it one time this morn as it was raining and there was a lot of traffic so i couldnt really play around too much
i was hoping to get a half day off today and get my exhaust leaks taken care off but another guy that works back here w/ me called in sick so it looks like i might be riding to nopi w/ an exhaust leak...oh well :smack:
an egt gauge would be a nice thing to have :)
edit: jinx

1.8 has nothing:mad:
Definitely something to look into as the tuning goes further...cause I'll take extra timing over extra boost any day.
