I don't know if you guys have had the luck my TDI beetle buddies in Durham have had, but they can't seem to get Rotella in bottles (just in a case). However, the BP on 70 West (infront of the Best Buy) has Rotella 15w40 for $2.69/bottle or a gallon for $7.69. I figured I'd pass it on incase anyone out there couldn't find it .....

I'm pretty sure that it's available at Wal-Mart, but.. it's not recommended for TDIs (especially that weight) so I'm not sure why your buddy wants it.

*Most* of the TDI owners I've known in Florida, Durham and Memphis said Rotella was the stuff to use. What is the weight oil that it ships with/book recommends? I've personally never seen it at walmart, but then again, locaing 5w30 Extended Performance Mobil-1 in a gallon bottle (or in the quart) is hard at walmart sometimes too.

5w-40 is the recommened weight. In Florida you could probably get away with some heavier stuff, but the newer VW Standard is 0w-30 nowadays.
I guess with the old ALH engines it's probably OK to use Rotella (still not sure about 15w-40 though). Using Rotella in a PD engine with void the warantee (if they find that you use it).

I asked Lisa and she has a pre-PD and she runs a heaver than 14w40 in her car for her own reasons, but it's synthetic. she said the oil I found is the "common" rotella that most people don't use for the TDI and that the synthetic is what most pre-PD owners WILL use if you can find it (and she hasn't). So she uses devlac-1. Mystery solved?
