Just got my 3rd CEL in 2 months. All three are P0420. The first two happened right after I had fill up with gas (Shell V-Power), so I figured I didn't tighten the gas cap enough. I disconnected the battery for a few minutes and the CEL light stayed off. This morning the CEL came on and I had about a half a tank of gas and been running on it since Saturday and for 200 miles.

The Code today is P0420 Catalyst Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1). So my question is, could my O2 sensor be slowly fading? I'm assuming it's the post O2 Sensor based on searching other forums. Or is it my CAT? Since it seems to stay off a few weeks after I clear it, I'll probably wait to fix it. Also I'm flat broke at the moment.

My car is a 2003 Jetta GLS 1.8T. All advice is greatly appreciated.

That's a code for the rear 02. Usually that flags when either you have installed a aftermarket downpipe or the cat is going bad.

If you have allready passed your inspection you can wait til that rolls around to fix.

some chips disable the 2nd o2 sensor...

catbacks dont typically replace the cat.. just everything after it.

they dont really disable them...

they just stop reading from them.. BUT if you remove it completely.. you will throw a CEL... know from experience.. on TWO cars
