He thought it was an MKII Jetta when he told me about it.
We went and looked it over Sunday - it turned out to be a Quantum GL5 4door Automatic.
We don't know what thats all about at that time. GL5 ?? idunno - but I've heard of a 5cyl VW Quantum wagon once before - idunno, but its NOT a 5spd symbolism - thats for sure. Because its an automatic.
He just started messing with VW's about a month ago - when I hooked him up with an 85 Jetta GL Turbo Diesel.
I'm just a 6 month rookie myself.
We are greasy smokey Diesel Demons from Hellalueyah

So nobody is home and car is locked tight. Body and Interior are basically mint. Good tires
Has a sign with price only, no contact info.
Car is loaded to the hilt with options.
I didn't think to check mileage, and it was automatic. ehh
He needs seats BAD for his Jetta - and these were NICE. REAL NICE.
But its priced way above parts car price. ugh

I went on Vortex Sunday night and found out what the GL5 was all about.
Audi 5 cyl gas engine.
hmmm......
He was in the market for an automatic car for his grand daughter.
Had already told him to stay away from Digi2 1.8's
This "might" be something here.

Went back Monday and got someone to door. It is his wife's Car.
Her father bought it new, and gave it to her about 3 years ago.
She stopped driving it about 6 months ago due to right front wheel clicking.
He says its an 86 model with almost 400,000 miles......
We kind of look at each other like - What The Fock ?
He hands me the keys and says "see for yourself, I don't really know about cars much at all, but it still runs".

At that point, we were sort of expecting it to be a tired old sputtering smoking engine with a quirky tranny - maybe we could work them down to a parts car price. With that kind of mileage.

Damn thing cranks right up and no smoke at all. I pull cap off valve cover and No Blow-By. damn !!
Took it for a ride, tranny did great without flaw. Ran and drove great.
Everything worked except radio, pwr antenna, and A/C comp didn't engage.
I forgot to check cruise control.

I worked out a good deal on it, and my friend bought it on the spot Monday night.

Tuesday night I pulled the Heidelberg III radio out, and the fuse was blown on the back of it.
Wrapped the old glass fuse in foil to test - hook it back up - it works and the antenna goes up. COOL

Its sort of a grey/gold/champagne color (< same as his 85 TD) 4 door with Black interior. No rust or wrecks. Original paint. Outstanding interior. And loaded to the gills. All original and well kept. Nothing goofy crappy or buggery under the hood - looks untouched basically.

Pwr str, pwr brks, pwr antenna, pwr windows, pwr mirrors, pwr sunroof, cruise, am-fm cassette, tachometer, a/c, rear headrests, heigth adj seats, central locking system, alloys, and probably more that we don't know about yet. LoL

All that shit works too ! - except the cassette tape player and a/c. Cruise unknown just yet. Speakers are about shot but still work.

I've never known or heard of any VW gassers with almost 400k miles. Pretty wicked.

We're going to swap the Quantum seats into his Jetta. Just takes a minor modification.
I sourced some good matching door panels, black carpet and console from local boneyard - 88 Golf.
No more nasty worn out brown interior in his 85 TD after this. He has a great car - but an awful interior.
We'll put my old 89 Grey seats in the Quantum - and Quantum is going to be his grand daughters daily driver.

The three speed auto you've got in that has the same internals as shared across the VW/Audi lineup up until the early 90s when the electronically controlled 4 speed unit came out. Night and day difference between the two.

While it won't win any awards for economy or passenger comforts, and will probably rev to high hell on the freeway, it is damn near indestructable.

This is compared to the 4 speed which will break down on you if you so much as look at it wrong.

The 3 speed auto on my dad's 91 Vanagon has 264,000 miles on it and still works fine. It's had a consistent ATF leak for the past 64,000 - when it gets about a quart low it starts shifting funny, and thats when you know its time to top off. Hasn't hurt a thing though... Try doing that on a new car.

Theres a really nice Quantum wagon on campus a lot - totally mint looking with snowflakes. Keep meaning to drop a card for the forums.

Good luck with the new acquisition. Next thing you know you guys are going to be running a VW shop out there!

Right about the revs - it turns about 2500 at 55mph.
I'm sure that would be over 3000 at 70'ish.

I wouldn't have thought there would be any difference on the Quantum seat mounts as opposed to mk2.
They "look" just the same.
But some B2 guys on Vortex said they wouldn't work.
So at the boneyard, I took a seat from an 89 Fox and tried it in an 88 Golf.
For whatever reason, the rear legs on seat mounts are about 1/2" - 3/4" narrower on B2, than on A2.
At least the difference is something I can work with.

I'll have to spread the Quantum legs apart just a bit to go into the Jetta.
With a bottle jack - or bend with a rod inside the hollow legs.
And then bend the legs in, or knock with sledgehammer, on the Jetta seats - to go into the Quantum.

Have not checked into the rear seat department yet.
I'm sure something will work out one way or another.
I've got some pretty big hammers, cutting tools and such. :)

Quantum has the same 13" alloys as what were on that 86 Jetta TD/GL you parted out.

3000 at 70 wouldn't be too bad. The van is pushing 4000 at that speed though.

My Beetle hits 3000rpms around 60-65mph. I'm at 3500 around 72mph (which is her sweet spot for gas mileage :))
