Got my software straightened out. Drove kinda hard home. Opeb hood and find manifold/turbo glowing bright orange. I know this can happen. Just didnt think it could do this with just software. I was told this is okay. Im def unsettled by this. But if its ok then im fine. I never thought i could do this with such a stock car. Figured glowing manifolds only happened like this on heavily modified engines. Maybe im running rich. Dont know. Ill check it out. Or maybe im just a worrisome bitch. Someone tell me.

its fine

mine used to glow w/ only a chip

its called heat

turbochargers generate a lot of it

Depends on how much you railed on it. I've seen it happen numerous times. Especailly after several back to back pulls and not alot of cooldown.

Afar from the demo the turbo has'nt been ran that hot either.

then its probably ok. It was like several back to back stoplights and i was thinking that was what it was but i wanted to make sure. if its ok then i dont care. Ill just be easier on it. I drive like a bitch most of the time anyway.

Ummm k.

Would I need to ditch the engine cover when I get chipped? I didn't spend that many hours painting that biotch to have it get effed up or melt or something.

you need to ditch the engine cover regardless.:smack:

make sure you don't shut it off while it's hot. It will trash the turbo. Also the high temps could be a sign of late timing. Your ecu may be retarding the timing due to other dangerous factors so you may want to check it out further. Get with someone with a vag com and do some logs. A glowing manifold can be ok but I have certainy seen a turbo come apart from the to much heat. I don't know what car you have or what software you have in it but these are just some things to keep in mind.

His timing is set safely.;) The flash was just put on his car and shortly after a few hard pulls the glowing turbo came to be. It's probably the first time it's been ran that hard as well.

I agree on giving the turbo time to cool down.

also ditch the r/f headlight and the she-male sticker.:gt-ogb-spank:

Travis I am not saying there is a problem with the software I'm just saying it needs to be checked out a little before he lunches a turbo or worse. Everything may well be normal but I think it is irresponsible to sit here and tell him everything is ok when it may not be. I am just saying check it out. What if he has a bad mafs sensor, fpr or fuel pump and it's leaning out up top etc etc etc? Can you say that isn't the case? Not without logging it some. That's all I am suggesting.

I got my turbo and manifold to glow on my 01 A4 1.8tq after a few back road drag races with a buddy who had an A4 2.8q. Car was completely stock. (1.8t won all btw) :ohyeah: But as mentioned before... allow it to cool down properly before shutting it off.

Stan- Your engine cover will be fine after you're chipped, it won't melt.... although if it did, it wouldn't be so bad. :D

Anyway, changing the subject from painted engine covers. Hasnt done it sense the first night. Havent driven it hard sense then though. I also know not to shut it off. I seen first hand lots of times the effects, I work on these things. I dont want to kill my turbo either, at least until i can afford to make it my excuse for getting a GT2871R. I know Ian will have a response to that last line.

dont stress about making the ko3 glow...you're supposed to beat the everliving piss out of it. It still amazes me just how far you can take that turbo out of its eff. range and still last as long as it does. I guess thats on of the benefits of having coolant lines going to the turbo over say a t3/t4. Plenty of people here on the boards have gotten 80k+ miles boosting them to 23psi.

and dont stop with the 2871r....go 3071r .64.

I've seen a glowing turbo/manifold on a stock Volvo before after some hard pulls so i wouldn't sweat it too much. I've also seen my old K03s glowing a few times and never had a problem out of it. They're definiately tough, just don't cut it off immediately after running it hard and it should serve you well until you upgrade.
