Alright fellas...everyone has gone/is going the with upgraded air to air intercooler to keep their intake temps down. I've done a little research and thinking of going with an air/water intercooling system. Seems to be a lot more efficient than the air systems and the shorter charge pipe length definitely interests me. When some of the vr guys go turbo, this might be a better choice considering the space limitations of trying to run a fmic.

What I need to get this going:

A core...there is the inline pwr coolers which are the standard but they also run about 300 for the core.

Or...there are ebay versions that are knockoffs of Precision cores that go for about $120. These seem to get good reviews and they would fit right where the stock side mount resided. Airflow to the core is not needed but could always help. Also, the stock piping route could be reused:cool:

A fluid heatsink that works like an oil/tranny cooler. This could be mounted right by the radiator. Hose would run from the pump to this, back to the core. Looking at $25-$35

You would also need a pump to keep the fluid mixture going. A lot of guys use the shurflo pumps that rob and I are already using for our meth injection kits. Looking at about $75 bucks for one of these.

Now you need to figure the reservoir which could be a little large to fit in the engine bay. Most guys say to go with the biggest reservoir you can so you keep the mixture cool. I'm *thinking* of tapping into my windshield washer reservoir for this too using my meth/water mixture to get the system up and going. If I didnt get the cooling results I am looking for, I could run longer lines to the trunk and use a seperate reservoir with coolant/water mix.

These are initial thoughts...looking for feedback.:oddeye-hellyeah:

I've always heard great things about the pwr intercoolers. You could also mount it in the fender well, or right after the turbo perhaps.....

My main suggestion & concern, would be the stock intercooler piping. (Not the routing, the piping itself)

you know how I feel about that piping...thats why I said routing:)

Charge pipe comes over the engine like a fmic but down on the passenger side...you will be able to reuse the throttle body ic hose if you want. Or you could run it under like the stock charge piping but over would be easier and less of a mess.

kinda like this

I know this isn't to scale, but you get the idea.

jackson racing makes a complete unit that makes me think my heat exchanger might not be enough...the one they use looks like a small radiator/large oil cooler. The whole unit goes for $1000+

looks like the lightning and shelby gt500 both use water/air intercoolers...wonder is gerich could get ahold of some of these goodies.

vortech also makes one that is used on several domestic kits, along with Ryan Chengs SI kit they make.

The air to water intercoolers you speak of sit below the roots style blower between the intake manifold and the charger. Absolutely nothing useful for a 1.8t unfortunately.

alot of the miata guys also run the pwr air/water coolers(might be able to find a used set up there) I think when the time comes i will go that on the g60, perfect spot sitting right on top of the transmission

Hell yea. Remote tank in the trunk...you can throw ice in it for race days...not like you have traction with that beast anyways ;)
