Well I finally picked up one of these.
It's a modshack BAMM (Big Ass Metal Maf) aka the MOFO (Mass Oxygen Flow Optimizer). Simple 5 minute install. Took longer to get the OEM MAF screws out than anything else. Put it in and went for a drive.

I'm seriously shocked by how much difference I feel with the good ole butt dyno. Third gear scares me now. It's not done that in awhile. It feels like at least a 10% gain if not more. I'll do some logs later as well.

is the diameter the same?

No the ID is larger. It also has a venturi taper on the inlet side to allow for better air flow characteristics.
Overall the unit is slightly larger ID wise than the OEM MAF. From his site he states that the MAF is only .15 larger in diameter than the OEM piece, which increase the surface area of the maf by 11%.
Couple that with a 4bar FPR to balance out the Fuel trims.
If the maf where any larger, it would'nt be able to adapt to the ECU adaptions limits and throw codes.

His name is Steve Schwing, fellow NC guy as well, he is pretty recognized in the Audi TT world. His forum name is TTSchwing. He pioneered using the Boost Machine and makes his own intakes as well.

I see I see. Very interesting. Def drivers race. Launching is hard. Ask Evan. Hes good at it and I suck at it. My best time is 8.39. Im shooting for 8.0's if I can swing it. My reaction and 60' sucks ass. I figure if I can get those down and maybe get some wieght off my fat ass thne I could pull it off.:oddeye-hellyeah: You wanna hit roxboro tonight?

Best I've done at peidmont was a 9.3 with a 2.4 60'
I can launch on the street. Piedmont sucks I guess. Hard to say with the lack of other FWD 1.8t people that ran.
I'm anxious to go to a better track and see what happens.

You mean +10% of your total power? So +20-25 or so HP? Thats quite a gain, I didn't realize the stock MAF was that crappy... Have you seen any dyno's up of these? I'd like to see what the power curve looks like. :oddeye-hellyeah:
P.S. I want a ride :yum:

Its not that the stock maf is crappy...well actually they are but thats a different story that vw has to warranty....but we're talking about the maf housing here.
Most of the aftermarket chips make your car run quite a bit rich...especially up top to keep things safe. This bamm is a tiny bit larger allowing more air to flow while keeping the maf sensor in its efficiency range. This leans things out a bit and gives you a nice bump in power which travis is seeing.

back from the dead... but.. a lot of his gains are probably from the samco turbo inlet hose as well, correct?

Well he can drive .... he took it off because it was running alittle lean.:)

The way I understand the BAMM is that it increases the MAF housing ID. Only by a small amount, but it increase surface area by around 10%.
By moving to a larger maf the ECU should add a little timing into the mix. To offset the extra air, you usually add a 4bar FPR to get the fuel trims within adaption.
On a stage 2 revo car that is allready running a 4bar it puts the fuel trims to about 17% which is a bit much on the lean scale of things.
On Lee's stage 1 revo with the BAMM and a 4bar the trims are around -3% slighltly rich but nothing the ecu can't adapt, usually around -10 to +10
