ok heres the deal, I know a guy who wants to trade a 2002 rave green GTI in mint condition, never wrecked as a straight trade for my 1999 passat wagon. the gti just broke 100k and has never had the timing belt done. also the clutch is starting to slip. hes willing to tow the car to me also.
my car on the other end, it has a brand new turbo and brand new belts, its a 100% great DD.
should I do it or no?
and if i would trade, is there anybody will to do my tbelt job? Im willing to pay $$$.
the kit for the car i suppose is around $300.
I just dont want to pay $1000+ at a shop

Hmmm. new turbo and new belts? Who has the higher mileage. If the mileage difference isn't too great, I'd say ask for a little cash (500-100). But if your mileage is way higher, then it's probably close to a fair trade.
*ahem* I do timing belts, the clutch isn't too hard either, but will be about 300 dollars in parts.

mine has 115k.
he just had a kid and he needs a family car for him and his wife, he really really wants my wagon. he also said he will let me keep my rs4 wheels and my entire sound system with wood flooring.
ron, if you were to do my belts and clutch it would only be $300 in parts?

Um, trade.
If I was in your shoes, anyway.
You're doing him a favor, plus that's a rare color for a GTI. If you can keep the audio + wheels; why not??

First, I agree with Foxie's statement.
ron, if you were to do my belts and clutch it would only be $300 in parts?
Second, I'd recommend this for a clutch kit ( a little more than I remembered, but would be good for years)

And this for the Timing belt/waterpump fiasco:

You can get the coolant at a local store (believe it or not)

or get it at the dealer for about the same price. You need two jugs.
As far as prices go. Buy me gas (for my drive), food, and maybe a little compensation for time/labor and we're good. The clutch isn't something done in a day though without a lift, if the clutch is going to be done in a driveway, that's going to cost a little.

..and remember the RS4 wheels are 5x112 while the mkIVs are 5x100
I agree though..if you can swing the cost of the timing belt and clutch, go for it.

I agree.
If your wagen is something you can let go and your not to attached on having a cruise mobile, then DO IT. You talk about all the time having the VR because its fast i guess, so why not. Every one has different tastes.
And who ever said your doing him a favor, i also agree with, if they can benefit from the wagen too, your doing something awesome.
And Ron, I want those tails :)

Yea maybe it does, but there are times I to have to ramble on about what i'm gonna do to my car. But the only thing that actually stops me are girls, and money.
Or the simple fact I really don't have time to screw with it during college.
