Hello everyone, I'm new to the forum and was referred here by some friends over at newbeetle.org. Anywho, I have a 2000 Beetle TDI and my glow plug light never stays on and in the cold weather I can't start her. My battery is fine, all my glow plugs have been checked, I just installed a new glow plug relay and still the light turns right off and no heating occurs. No check engine light is on. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance!!

Could be something wrong with a temperature sender somewhere. The ECU thinks the ambient temperature is much warmer than it really is, so it doesn't cycle the glow plugs for long enough...

Try some searches on tdiclub.com and you'll definitely find the answer..

You won't find more information in one place, anywhere.

My mother brings her 2001 tdi beetle here for what seems each winter when the ex flakes out with the kids(although she's here now helping me after my surgery). Hers doesn't stay on very long either however I always wait a few more seconds after it goes out and it starts fine for me. Naturally, she tells me it won't start for her. But I'll go out in like 20 degree weather where she hasn't touched it yet and it'll start fine for me but she doesn't have the same luck because she doesn't wait like I do..... Its not supposed to make a difference since the light goes out, but it does for me. ?
Fookin GREAT motors though! In a few years I want to do a tdi swap into my passat wagon if I still have it.

i think i remember your thread from the org :)

I didn't think about the tempature sensors of the system, that would be something to check into. and I concur with jnecr, there is nothing better for a diesel than tdiclub.com!

The Glow plugs are said to stay on for a few seconds after the light goes out. But they will turn off eventually. Also... don't be afraid to cycle the glow plugs twice, there's no harm in that at all. In really cold weather I'll cycle them twice very quickly and it'll start right up (a little smoke, but that's fine by me :) ).
