im suprised how many problems the B5's have.... it being a German built car when many if not all the other cars in VW's line up were Mexican built during the time period when it was produced. The number of issues these cars have is epic..... then on the other end of the scale Audis sold back then were dead reliable.
The 1.8t sludge issue is really pretty sad aswell.

yea, 1.8t sludge deserves it own rant thread.

You can rant all you want but the B5 passat was super reliable and still is. The 5.5 was less reliable but still a great car. The only two issues that leave them broken are customer neglect. Oil sludge NEVER happens to a car that is maintained. It only happens if you use the wrong oil, go too long between changes or do not keep the level up between changes. The only other thing that breaks them is if you let the timing belt break. We rarely ever have one towed in. I would much rather jump in my worst shape customer passat and try and make it across the country then 95% of other same age/mileage cars. Sure shit wears out on them like any other car or anything that has moving parts. But show me a car that stays on the road better.

id neglet my passat too if it needed a transmission , rack, 3 window regs, radaitor, coolant flange, an axle, and a abs computer,12 valves, a cam gear, and an ignition control module all before 80k. most of those items mentioned required a tow truck.
evan@absolute
May 28th, 2010, 03:18 PM
12valves=neglect
axle= neglect
cam gear=neglect or shit work I would have to guess. What besides someone breaking it or a cam seizing would fuck it up.
transmission before 80k??? could be but I have only seen 2 or 3 ever even at 200k.
ps rack or radiator. we haven't done 10 total.
Abs module I will give you. They had a lot fail but then again we do as many Volvo abs modules as passat/a4/s4/a6/a8 all put together.
Window regulators we do some but not like the mk4s.
I am not saying the cars are without flaws but I think we service more passats then any other model and do no more repairs then others. Mostly just help people keep them maintained.
We could go on but you have one car that seems to somehow need a lot of work. And 80k also seems to be 11 or 12 years too since you say ignition module which only came on a 98 or 99. So saying 80k is a little misleading since for most people that would be 4-5 years.

You sure made a lot of dumb pointless threads if that is the case.
People need to remember, the Passat B5 platform if basically a bigger MK4... A lot of the stuff is the same, or basically the same.

I <3 B5's.... the only thing I really hate about it is the heater core. The other stuff on my car was the result of bad maintenance by previous dumbasses. My next one will be a B6 and I'm sure it has its issues....

passat is closer to a A4 and A6 than a "larger MK4" esp 4 motion ones.

bad ign switch
yo dude, this might be the source of all the ground problems mentioned in your other thread. bad ign switch = fuel pump relay and load reduction relay do not get any power. along with any other relays located on that same board, which is a possible 5 total iirc..

I'm with Tom on this. I have seen alot of passat problems. Windows, ABS, but than again you get your stupid people. Like the ones that remove fuses and put the in other spots to make something else work. Why not just buy a new fuse... Cars don't hurt each other people, stupid people hurt cars....

love my passat. Its a 04 1.8 and bought it at 38000 miles last october. Its about to crest 54000, if it didnt on my lunch break today. No problems other than the nipples were still on my sunroof drains witch caused some leakage but nothing major so far. Going to need to get a clutch soon but thats because of my driving habbits. Solid car from what I can tell. :gt-happyup:
My two cents, which may be worth nothing.

B5 Passat wagon, you can sleep in it ftw!
Also wife's 2000 GLX wagon has rain sensing wipers, power folding rearview mirrors, bunch of other shit even the Audi's didn't get for a while..and they still work.

That is like saying a tent is better then a house cause you haven't had to replace the HVAC. The only thing nice about a 95 golf is IF the A/c works it is really cold. But shit the mk3 a/c compressors fail ALL THE TIME. Passats very rarely. I would say I have made twice as much off mk3 a/c work then passat a/c work in the last 10 years.
But in the end it is all what you want in a car. Modern, safe, semi-luxury is going to cost more then super basic transportation. It is the same way with anything you own for the most part.

Seriously.... I've had EVERYTHING POSSIBLE go wrong with my current B5. Before that I had a meticulously maintained absolutely PERFECT B5 that was great other than a coolant temp sensor. Then I bought the devil's car that was 100% obviously not maintained properly by previous owner(s). It was chipped though! So I should hate these cars WAY more than anybody that makes money working on them. I don't though. Its a great car. I'm coming up on 20 years of owning my scirocco and its a complete piece of dung in an overall comparison IMHO. But, you can't have my dung either. That's my piece of crap! I'm kinda fond of the airbags all over the place too. There's a good chance I might have kids driving these B5+'s in a few years so I'm thinking about that already.

I think the biggest problem I've noticed in this whole thread is comparing it to other cars. You'll never win an argument comparing apples to oranges. The abs module in my B5 has never worked but I can't compare it to the SAI on my B4 or the sunroof on my mk3 or the ISV on my mk2 or anything CIS on the MK1, they just aren't the same but each have their own issues.
I've owned or own just about one of everything and the B5 has been the most reliable so far. Even the things that break are reliable, it's usually the same part over and over again. :D

does that mean I cant hang out @ the cool new shop when I drive my B5, I have to come in my MK4? Was that not the same B5 with a hot tub (few inches of water & 120 possible amps flowing) in the front floor board?

oh yeah, back to my mentor days @ VW South, mine gave me a B5 that would start and shut off fine. As long as the head lights wear off. If they were on, you could take the key out and go in the house with the car running. Customer thought it was a "Turbo Timer". Cant lie, it kicked my butt for a while..............Any guesses?.....................Driver's heated seat switch was back feeding the power from the light circuit to the ignition circuit................That car ran without a key DJ, ur argument is invalid.

you can do that too with the cars with the homelink in the sunvisor, unplug it and plug it into the light socket for the visor, car won't shut off. I'm not that cruel to do it to anyone yet though...

i'm sorry, i have to whole heartedly disagree.
I heart my B5. its a 98, 1.8t 5 speed about to roll 114k. I bought it for a grand, it's uglier than sin with a dent in every panel but i'm only out a few hundred bucks in repairs that weren't my fault.
reman abs module
thermostat
1 ignition coil.
with that said i've broke just about everything else myself including smacking a deep pothole at 40mph but out of all the vw's i've owned, the b5 is old faithful to me :)
