Hi. I'm hanging with a great group of folks in Charlotte from NCDubs. I know we have some folks in Asheville as well.
Some of us here in Charlotte were talking about doing a drive up to Asheville, and maybe congregating at the Rankin St. garage for a meet up. Maybe a drive up the parkway to the Pisgah Inn and back or something like that as well. Maybe meet back at the garage, then head to Thirsty Monk or something. :oddeye-hellyeah:
The idea came up of involving the Asheville Area Dubbers and making it a party.
If anyone is into it, let's start tossing around some dates. :gt-darkball-think2:

haha I totally forgot about this forum.
I lurk in the vortex thread a bit, but haven't been able to make it to any meets and couldn't afford SOWO this year :(
I'd really like to meet some dubbers, so I'll try to stay tuned in.

I'd love to go tear through the mountains but I am scared I'd break something... Regardless, I think it is a good idea.. we could combine this with the photo shoot.

Easiest way to A-ville from here is 85 to 321 to... you guessed it 40 west.

There is actually another way for the guy from charlotte I think they can almost take 85 all the way to asheville.

I've gone all the ways possible pretty much. You can take 85 south to 26 east, or you can take 74 the whole way, but I've found 85 to 321 to 40 the easiest, done in 2 hours door to door and you steer clear of the small towns like Shelby.

i used to drive to asheville from charlotte monthly and the easiest way I found was 85 to 321. but we could take 85 to 321 up to 40 and drive the sweet curves up Black Mountain and that way we could pick up johnboy outside hkry.
btw I am game...i think that would be a good idea for a saturday or sunday

exept Bele Chere weekend
that's unfortunate, because i was thinking about going there that weekend... but i might be down once a date is ironed out. last time i was there the parkway was closed south of hwy 191, and i feel like i missed out on something because all the places i found ahead of time to hike to a nice view were along that stretch. i hear it is open again, so i am itching to come back.

Great idea. The garage on Rankin offer stellar views of the mtns in the distance, and the downtown skyline. and access to many many places to eat & drink. walking distance to cheap hotel if you want to stay, which my wife and i will definitely do.
this sounds like the deal. let's talk dates. we'll start two weekends out. anyone? :upyeah:

I think maybe a Sunday cruise on the 22nd? If we all get up early (like 10AM or so) that would give us time to get to A-Ville, cruise around for a while and if any of the Wilmy people are coming they will still have time to make their 5 hour trek back down 40 East.

well.... warped tour is the 22nd... we will be there ALL day.. i was thinking something along the lines of either the 21st or the 23rd...
seeing how the 23rd is a friday... that would be better for a bigger turnout!

how about Saturday, Sept 4th?
If you feel like making it a weekend, which my wife and I will probably do. Downtown Inn & Suites(formerly Days Inn) on Patton Ave is a cheap stay right downtown. There is also a Renaissance downtown if you want to wallow in luxury. We've stayed at both. Set your expectations accordingly.
IMHO, Saturday is preferable to Sunday because those who want to stay and party can do that, and those that are taking off still can, and still have the rest of the weekend to do whatever at home.

The 4th will work fine for me. I agree with it being on a weekend and preferably a Saturday. Turns out those guys from Wilmington are coming up this month and not Aug.. actually it's this week.

oops. i'll be at the beach on Sept 4th. :smack:
weekends of Aug 28th or Sept 18th maybe?
85 - 74 - 26 is the shortest way. only by about 5 miles. it's a nice drive.

I actually think 85 to 321 to I40w and pick me up is the best way and this way you get to climb black mountain and go down it to.

See you guys then.
I will prepare multiple cruise routes, there really so much to choose from
Waterfalls?epic vistas?and amazing roads everywhere.but after driving up,how much driving are you gonna want to do?
Pete-Diddy
July 28th, 2010, 04:44 PM
the drive up is short, only about 2 hours. Maybe we can get out and stretch the legs/ chill with the peoples for a bit. I know I'd be good for another hour+ cruise. I know lots of fun roads off Leicester... out towards hot springs.

I can't do 8/28. i'll be at the beach. i say move it to Sept anyway. escape this oppressive heat. it's nice in the mountains in the Fall.:oddball-thatworks:
a cruise up there would be good, but i'm more about getting there when i'm on my way somewhere.
i was thinking the cruise could be from Asheville up the parkway to Pisgah Inn, and have lunch there. it's a nice twisty drive up the Blue Ridge Pkwy. though anyone who wants to do a cruise on the way, that's all good too.

Sept 11th seems like bad mojo. i don't wanna put a hex on the whole thing. Sept 18th ought to put us right in the sweet spot as far as the weather.

The BRP is closed from A town to 151, may not be by then.
But, there are way nicer roads with way less traffic than the BRP
Better food around than pisgah inn too
Anyhoo whatever whenever, I live here so dates don't really matter to me:cool-up:

It's will have been 10 years.. no need to withhold anything because of a date. Maybe we could make a 10 year we haven't forgotten cruise. Regardless, I am up for whatever date.

I think Pisagah Inn's food is stellar. especially at night. it's a whole different menu. i remember having awesome pork chops with walnut stuffing when we stayed there. :sex0ring-up:
great view, and great hiking nearby. Graveyard fields is a really cool hike.:oddeye-hellyeah:
but if the BPW is closed, we'll have to take another mountain road to somewhere. i'm sure we'll figure it out.:gt-bb-chongin:
mid september will be our best bet for moderate weather. i say we shoot for that.

The BRP is closed from A town to 151, may not be by then.
that section was closed last time i was there (when i saw you in downtown), but the park service website says that section is open again (?)
all it says is:
In North Carolina
Sections of the Parkway from MP 393 at the French Broad River to MP 383 at the US 70 access in the Asheville area will be closed from 8:30 AM - 3:30 PM the week of July 19-23 to facilitate corridor tree trimming.
http://www.nps.gov/blri/planyourvisit/roadclosures.htm
before it had mentioned that the section from 191 to 151 was closed (and it definitely was) due to something about engineers saying conditions were favorable for mudslides

i won't be mobile until late november, driving wise. but i'd encourage everyone to do this anyway as soon as you can. it'll be a great time.

I agree with Johnboy , late sept early oct would be perfect. Not hot outside anymore ( even tho i love the heat ), will be hell of a lot cooler ( temp wise ) plus the scenerary will start to change and make for some good pics ! A saturday would be perfect , people can stay late and have a good time , and have sunday to recover and be lazy/relax and get ready for monday the start of a new work week. I know , for me I wouldnt want to drive 2 hours on sunday hang out and drive home on sunday at 9pm . Just a thought !
