Mom's 01 TDI beetle.... absolutely no symptoms the past few days and now it just won't start. Turns over fine. Naturally since I rode my motorcycle to FL I didn't bring the vag-com laptop or cable so I'm screwed. I did use a generic code scanner that I keep in my suburban (wife drove it down here) and there's no codes. Any ideas where to start. I assume I'll end up looking at this injection pump but what should I be looking at or listening to or otherwise beating with a hammer? Timing belt was done a year or so ago by me so I'll look at it but at this point I'd rule it out. TIA

Dan look at what appears to be the throttle body but is actually the egr valve on the tdi. The flaps get stuck open and it won't start. Flip it closed and it work like a champ.

It's open but the spring/cable/whatever seems to be holding it open.

uh yea sorry I meant stuck closed. if it is open it isn't the problem.

Yeah it's open. She's going to get it towed tomorrow am if I can't miraculously figure it out. When it's turning over, should I hear the fuel injection pump clicking? It's kinda quiet turning over.

And I didn't look at timing but the belt is still intact/tight as can be.

Air in the lines.... $1300 just for parts plus $300 diagnose/install. They want to replace all the fuel lines saying they all look like crap. 6 of them from/to pump and from the tank to the engine. Fuel filter too which I replaced a year or two ago.

have them try just a new fuel filter and seals for it. Or be able to show you where the line is leaking. That sounds suspect at best.

In their defense, I kinda agree that all the lines look like shit. I mean really bad... at least in the engine bay. That car has been outside in FL since 2001. The heat has cooked the entire interior too (headliner falling and door panels dead). For the first two years my parents parked it in the grass/dirt while they were looking for a lot to build their house and then while it was getting built. I've done all but the big vacuum line that goes from the "throttle body" along the firewall because they're all dead. I hear you Evan LOUD and CLEAR and that's all I'd do if it was me but my mom has this "its gotta run perfect so I don't get stuck on the highway between NC and FL" mentality.

How many miles has this puppy got?! I have 250k on my car and I'm pretty sure I've not replaced my lines. And It's a black, FL/GA/AL car.....
