View Full Version : 1980 Rabbit

Allright, here goes:
1980 Rabbit - White. Got the car from Brick in trade for the Scirocco I got from Pinky that Pinky just bought from Brick.
Also combined with a Cabby that I killed for parts.
Here are some pictures - some from other threads:

Motor - originally slated for the Scirocco:

02A - notice the skill with which I pressed the mount in upside down.
Using the tower and cables/box from an 02J. The bracket for the cable clutch conversion is all in the way of the reverse switch. I think I can cut down a late 2-pin 020 switch and get it to clear... maybe.

I'll add stuff over the next few months.

Same boat, although I opted to do nothing and have since abstained from notifying anyone of my impending reversing. Let me know if you come up with an elegant solution, I have just enough room to make some ghetto magic happen and the prospect does not excite me.
& BTW, the 02a with 02j shift tower cables & box is absolutely fantastic. Although if I were doing it again I would put the time in to do a hydraulic clutch, maybe.

Though the brake related stuff (including the booster) I used caliper paint with the hope that it might have some resistance to brake fluid.

More progress of sorts yesterday. I'm getting too much crap piled around the house so I'm assembling as much as I can while I wait for the car.
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a334/chadcronin/Mk1/2011-02-28009.jpg
Also disassembled the best of the two sets of tail lights and cleaned a load of mildew and crap out of them. Still need to sand them down and polish. Stripped and dyed the plate tub I kept from the Cabby. Haven't decided if I'm going to use it yet.
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a334/chadcronin/Mk1/tlt001.jpg
Finished the brakes. I may end up not using the drums though as I've got most of what I need to convert to S2 brakes for the rear, but still need a(n) MC and proportioning valves.
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a334/chadcronin/Mk1/2011-02-28006.jpg
S2 junk. Some weirdness with the E-brake cabal bracket though.

Yeah, what is that on the rear brake calipers? Thems not on any Scirocco I've seen. I know at some point the scirocco guys were converting rear calipers over to MK3 ones....... And somehow I still have the factory original calipers. It pays to change brake fluid frequently.
And thanks for sharing on the paint. I'm gettin some of that!

I haven't tested it yet - I should have the car back from the painter this weekend, I'll see how it fits then. FWIW I ordered their sound deadening material as well - suposed to fit better with. As far as the slider cutouts are concerned, I went back and looked. They apparently have two listings for LHD. one says that, the other didn't. I ordered it on the 4th, recieved on the 18th. The carpet and underlayment were 250 shipping was an ass injuring 125+/-, but I had a bunch of other stuff in the order.

Yeah - and a few other things as well. I'm not totally pleased with the job. There is some half assery on the bay. None of it will be visible when I'm done, but I'll know. I guess you get what you pay for. Overall I'm happy with the exterior...
It's going back once I get it running, but before I get all the trim and such on.

Test fit the Newton carpet this morning. Fit is very good. I haven't decided what to do with the fire wall sound deadening yet so I didn't cut the holes for the retaining studs. As such it's got some slack up there. I'm going to let it sit for the week while I'm gone to let some of the folds from shipping relax out.

Truth.
I don't have the proper trim. I've got the German manufactured style with the metal backing, but made for US bumpers, so the spacing for the connectors is different and the width is about a half inch less. I will likely use generic self adhering rub strip for the time being.

It doesn't look like a lot, but the interior wiring is done (with the exception of the speaker stuff). The adaptation of all of the mk2 A/C HVAC setup to the Mk1 non-A/C was sort of a challenge, until I realized it wasn't. I still need to bridge from the old seat belt relay trigger to the radio for "switched" power as well.

All four of the Jetta/Cabby dash brackets are lined up and in and the dash actually fits. I'm not going to post pictures of the outters because they are exceeding ugly. Completely disassembled the thru firewall harness. Rebuilt it into three pieces to fit through the existing grommets and openings. All of the wiring to the rain-tray now runs directly from within the vehicle rather than into the engine bay and back into the rain-tray.

Couldn't sleep for shit last night, so I went ahead and finished most of the wiring up front.

I deleted the headlight power to the right side of the car, using the left side as a trigger for the relay harness. It as well as the the rerouted right turn and city light will run across the inside of the core support. Used weather pack connectors to tie it in, just need to add connections for the secondary lighting once I make those harnesses. Also left the reverse switch , both oil pressure and oil coolant temp (to gauge) loose until they can be trimmed once the motor is in. I'm tired of wiring for a while so I will likely wait a week or so before I do anything with engine management.

Hey Evan!
They each say 12v on them. Does that mean I have the 24v? Will it mak the General Lee horn that way? Or do I have to go to SoWo to get that?
Also hacked up those dash brackets in the background so the mk2 cluster fits a little better. They are not blurry in real life.

No, but they're prone to blowing cells faster than you can blink. Getting 3 years out of that was good luck :)
Optima is made by Johnson Controls, the same as the autocraft at advance, autozone, wally mart, and so on. The only thing optimas are good for are arcing the posts together with a pry bar. I can show you video evidence if you like.
After working for the fine establishment above (advance), warrantying hundreds of batteries a year, and after a good portion of training, I'd rather lean towards an interstate (the one in my b5 is seven years and still going), delco or an east penn/deka battery.

Actually looking at one now that while very similar it is different, still all metal. But the 90* nipple looks to be slightly larger diamter than the one in your pic. Though it may be all thickness, as the straight port also looks bigger on mine due to wall thickness. However this one does not have the weird square diggler that you had to grind off so maybe different. Part # is 068121133

Been slow again - works has been ridiculous. Also waiting on a couple of little things.
Rebuilt the wiper harness due to corrosion in the plug. CE2 ignition switch won't fit under the column surround - waiting on the CE1 version, I already built the new harness. Bunch of other misc crap here and there. I don't have any dash ducts for the non AC box and am not having much luck finding any, may have to go with some kind of resto flex duct.
Doesn't look much different.

Started cutting into the engine management harness, should be able to get that knocked out this week. Still trying to decide where to go through the rain tray. I'm leaning toward a new opening to the driver's side of the coil - similar to a Mk2. That will help some with the wire runs to the sensors on the motor.
While I was at it I went ahead added in the necessary wiring for front and rear fog lights. Also replaced the CE2 ignition switch. Was lucky to come across the connector from the parts cabby as it uses Timely pins rather than lugged spades so there was no cutting required.
Rerouted the shifter cables under the steering rack and made a bracket to keep them up and away from the DP.
Ran into a roadblock with the clutch cable, but now have that figured out with one on the way. The one I had has a ferrule on the pedal end for a mk3 style clutch pedal. Also located the proper distribution ducts for the dash. Most of that should show up this week. I've got some things at work wrapping up on the 15th so hopefully after that I can get back to making some solid progress.

I wasn't going to chop into the rain tray side of the the Digi harness. But I did. If I get some time tomorrow I'll punch a hole and start to tie off the runs.

Yeah, Vortex came through. The silicone reducer I ordered was 3 into 2.75. Really should been on the order of 3.25 to 2.75.
The bracket worked out OK. I took it back out this morning and added a support that aligns with one of the mounting points in the MAF housing. I welded a deformed nut to the part that drops into the washer bracket. I can thread bolt trough it to act as a set screw. I'm going to apply a sheet of neoprene to it once the paint dries and it should do the job. The welds a real ugly though. I'd redo it, but it's ugliness will help motivate me to get the whole thing out.

Needs a christmas tree
Christmas is in December. Maybe it's different in Canada?
Flushed the gas tank. Spent the entire fukin day trying to figure out where to put the pump and filter and how to route the lines. Ended up squeezing the pump next to the tank and placing the filter around in front of the spare tire well. Was going to use the old accumulator bracket, but didn't like how close it was to the wheel. Was maybe going to try to start it but decided I need to live up to my new name.

Lines increased from 5/16 to 3/8 to work with -6AN quick-lock fittings.
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a334/chadcronin/Mk1/FP-020.jpg
I've got a silicone hose with a nipple on the way so I can get the ISV routed in. Also need to get a bung welded into my header next week for the O2. Should be able to start it next Sunday.
Mr. Chan
July 27th, 2011, 08:21 PM
Built the radio harness tonight. Also drank a few too many beers. I should have the ISV plumbing sorted out tomorrow. Still haven't had header hacked up for the O2, but might just try to get it started anyway. It's pretty much ready.

Waiting on injectors. Decided to swap over to the 8V TB due to the availability of a port for the ISV. Had to redo the harness to swap back over from the 16v CIS-M version. Used the idle/wot switch from the donor cabby as it allowed for a little more flexibility. Cleaned things up a bit as well.

Cut up the old seat pans yesterday and got the adjustment tracks welded onto the new ones and back in. Adjusts all proper now. Built a harness/switch/light assembly for the hatch since the car originally didn't have provisions. Also installed the speakers, harness and media deck. Hooked it up to a 180gb hard drive in an enclosure under the dash. Realized that there are two versions of the hood latch. I have one version in the core and another on the hood and can't find any of the others I had in my pile. So waiting on a new one.

Blew the supply side fuel line at the FPR yesterday. It was awesome since the car didn't burn down. Due to my own dumbassery. Hopefully a little better now. Running open loop because digi 2 < CIS-M. This is a fact, I don't care what anyone says. The passenger poly bushing in the beam got some brake fluid on it and has now decide to creak. A lot. Been maybe having a cooling issue which I'm not even going to get into that is slowly being brought into line. Otherwise it's been pretty awesome. Also finally figured out how to get it across the fukin levee at the end of my driveway.

Looks really good, will have to see it in person. How does it drive compared to your Mk2 w/ the 16V, that much more responsive b/c of less weight? Excellent job.

This car is even better in person. You've got some serious patience to have done this as well as you have. Approved.

Too slow. Also mostly ignorant. Wouldn't want to hold Igor back.
Did a little bit last night. Most of all four arches covered. Should be swapping the coils out for something a little better in a month or so and can get to the rest then.
