hey guys!!!
i just got a '05 passat 2.0 TDI with 78k on it. I'm thinking to replace the timing belt, but i don't know if it's time yet, or.... i can drive it for a few thousands miles.... and also, when the timing belt is replaced, what else should be replaced ?
Thanks for any help !!!

look a little deeper into the ocd crazies :rolleyes:on tdiclub to decide but some people are replacing the balance shaft assembly on these motors with the timing belt also. I think it is overkill on the first belt and is very expensive. Then again you will be doing the balance shaft stuff eventually if you keep it and so you might want to go ahead and update it to the gear drive instead of the chain drive that is in it. I think 78k is a little early on that belt. I have never seen one not go to 100k so I would be comfortable riding it to 85 or 90k in my experience. Then again for piece of mind you can't beat doing it. This isn't the old stuff like the alh motors.

What Evan said. The 2.0 TDI in the Passat has a known balance shaft issue, the tell-tale sign is the engine sounds like marbles in a blender when idle or in motion (from the outside). It will chatter badly. If it goes so goes the oil pump and well most of the motor. I know it's a $2000+ repair par TDIClub.
However for the minimals, waterpump, tensioners, rollers and the belt plus cam gasket and a few other odds and ends. I hear those 2.0's are something else chipped, too.

first of all, thanks for your help
i'm in Portland OR, but i think i'll be fine as long as i have some suport from you guys. It's not my first timing belt replacement, but it's my first 2.0 TDI. dou you guys know any website where i can buy some quality parts? I know a wwebsite, it's called "wagenparts" pretty cheap but i don't know how good they are. One more thing, can you tell how old is a timing belt just looking at it? Cose mine looks like new to me, the steering pump belt too, only the serpentine belt it's split in half.
thanks again for all your answers

With the belt on the car it's really hard to tell, and even with it off the car it's hard to tell. My brand new 06's belt looked good at 90k and it was technically 10k over the change interval. Generally the tensioners give out before the belt snaps.
You can try boraparts, they specialize in tdi hardware. Not sure if they carry the 2.0 belt kit tho, I know they do the BEW, BRM and ALH belts... you have a BHW.

DO NOT get the parts from wagenparts.com. Or dieselvw.com...or anything that says Rothenbacher Engineering. They are all run by a guy known as "prothe" online. Sells cheap chinese junk.
ECSTuning usually has a lot of good timing belt kits, but I don't see the 2.0TDI listed for '05+. Looks like boraparts does have one, but you'll need to buy coolant: http://shopping.boraparts.com/product_info.php?cPath=21_30_184&products_id=355

Before you do the timing belt check the camshaft as those PDs are know for cam wear. My friend took on the PD timing belt job and ended up having to do the cam and the balance shafts after taking a closer look at everything. He did it and even for the money he made he would prefer not doing it again. good luck
