Okay, I found one 300 miles from my home and it 2006 passat value edition with 53,000 mileage for 8500 out door. I talked to used car dealer and sale man said it run great, drive great and veryy smooth he ever rode. What i need to know before i buying it and I'm hearing impaired and i know i cant hear engine very well. I scare about Cam and cam follower that can damage engine. How I would know if it still good? I cant take to vw dealership to get check up but can test drive. What i can do? Please help me. Thank you

cam follower should be fine, but should be checked/ changed soon. its a simple deal. check if rear pads have been done, dealer charges a zillion bux for that. yet again a simple deal. plan on a timing belt service soon. other than that ask for any service records, use your smell and sight to check that engine bay for signs of neglect, or half ass work. good luck man. after you buy one take it to a independent shop like Everything VW or the like and prevent getting hosed on simple maintenance that will help the new 2.notsoslow last forever.
also im not up on what those are worth but $8500 seems like fair retail not a killer deal.

When buying a used car taking it to a shop after you buy it makes little to no sense. At that point you own whatever problems that car has. If you signed the as-is disclosure you have no recourse. We see it all the time where people read the internet and then think they know what to look for and so they buy a complete pile of shit.
The question you should be asking is "where can I get a good buyer's inspection done on a VW near XYZ area?" If the dealer won't let you have it checked out before you buy it move on.

sometimes the problem shows up in the fuel pressure readings at the rail (vag com). the best way is to actually remove and inspect the cam follower.
i've seen the problem on cars with ~60k before. we replaced the cam, pump, etc (think $2k+) on a car with 71k. at that point the follower was missing the entire end, and the camshaft and fuel pump were junk.
to say that it is fine on a car with 58k is iffy.
i definitely agree with evan on this one. we've even steered pre-purchase inspection customers away from 2.0t vehicles because there were early signs of this issue.

i have heard and seen mucho mixed reviews on cam follower life.
i have replaced 2 on passats @80k ish. just slight wear no cam damage, but have inspected 3 or 4 on gti/gli with 50-70k and they look brand new, only replaced one if i recall and it was just worn coating. of coarse i have heard the horror stories but have yet to see it. dealer seems to be sopping up that gravy right now. either way damage seems inevitable at some point catch it early is the key.

I've seen em wiped out @ 8K with HPFP's, and 20K on stock systems. Early 06's obviously being alot more prone with the soft 1 piece cam, and the oil drinkers are bad no matter what cam variation. Well maintained, they can seemingly go a real long time...unfortunately, noone believes in good maintenance any more. 10K oil changes are ridiculous on these motors unless it's a straight highway cruiser, unless you're religious about checking/topping up your oil. There is a reason FSI's were only used for 2 years before being replaced...

okay, I called VWOA this morning and ask them few question and they told me that passat i want that came from southern state vw of durham when it was new. So i called to ssvw and ask them about camshaft and hpfp been replaced under warrenty, and they told me that it had been replace at 44,437 on oct 1 2009. Also alternator been replace and last service is coil pack. The dealership said that passat owner been good take care. I talked to my buddy whom owner of vw shop and he said it sound great deal with low mileage. If i buy it and i will not drive 300 miles to home, i will put on trailer to bring his shop to get 60k service done and change cam follower lobe for more safe for me.
Soon I will travel to greensboro, mountain city tenn, and richmond, va and wilmingtion.
BTW, it 2006 VW passat value edition.
