Just curios...what is the better way to go? The VR6 or the 1.8t? I'm interested in all the details of the swap, from performance gains to money pitfalls, and what I should watch out for with both motors. I have a 91 GTi 1.8l 8v. Any help would be appreciated.

well that is a hard question with no right answer. I have a 91 gti that I have a vr6 in. It is far from finished but was my motor choice. I will be putting a turbo on it though cause I can't imagine driving a na car. I think either one is a good swap. If you wonder which one is cheaper though you may not want to take it on. Either one will cost quite a bit to do nicely. If I had it to do over again I would do a turbo set up on the stock motor or a 16v. Add a stand alone system and it would be good to go.

The cost I was referring to is which motor is more cost effective as in horespower per dollar. Also which one is better when it comes time for up-keep like oil changes and the like. And one more qeustion, which one gets better gas mileage?lol

the only advantage the vr6 has is displacement period. With the added ccs it makes decent power without the expense of a turbo but hp per $ the 1.8 kicks it's ass. For total hp a vr6t would be boss but a LOT of $.
when it comes to these projects I have to admit I am jaded though. My dd car is awd and right at 500hp on pump gas. I have a hard time thinking about all that work to build a fwd car aiming for 250hp.
I say if you are going for 250 or less do a vr6 na. If you want 250-350 then go 1.8t if you want 350+ then go vr6t. :upyeah:

1.8t is also lighter and will provide a better balance, as far as handling is concerned..
