Well, after breaking the passenger side axle, I put a new one in and I still hear a "whisping" sound like something was rubbing while the car is in neutral. Thing is that its still in neutral with the clutch released, but the minute I push the clutch in the noise goes away. When I put it in gear and begin driving, I can lightly hear the whisping sound as it drives, especially when I'm next to another car or cement wall/building.

Does this sound like a clutch release / throw out bearing to you guys? Looking at the manuals I have (bently and haynes) both say I have to remove the transmission in order to replace the bearing. Is there any other way?

Sounds like a t.o. bearing.....only way to remove and replace is to remove the tranny....

Dude, you mentioned having this problem before, you should have remembered and replaced it while the motor is apart.
Either that or your just having a bad flashback when the subie would boost and whisp away... hehehehe

No, the problem before was clutch/flywheel chatter with the lightwieght G60 flywheel. I only noticed it when I was up against a building or something that echo'ed. Now the problem is extremely audible and I can hear it while driving with the windows up.

Well, guess i'm pulling the transmission apart. fun fun fun.

If its a throwout bearing you dont have to pull the tranny apart , just have to seperate the engine and transmission to get to it. I hope you havent meesed anything up inside the trans, that would definitly suck.
U sure it isn't a boost leak? ;)
Don't mind me man , just giving you a little hell. Im glad your car is back on the road- but Ive never pulled a tranny out of a fwd car untill I did a cavilier a long time ago..... that sucked.

Still, getting everything out of the way in order to separate the transmission from the engine requires that everything holding it in place be removed. Thus, once I separate it from the engine, I might as well drag it out in order to put the T.O. bearing in easier.

Anyway I cut it, this is going to suck.

Can someone explain how launching it hard enough to break an axle effect the T.O. bearing? or do I just have fantastic luck that it decided to start going right after I broke the axle?

before you take it out make sure it isn't just the sheet metal between the engine and trans near the axle. If it got bent a little it could rub the flywheel. When you press the clutch it might move things just enough to not rub(flex the flywheel) especailly if you have an aftermarket light weight one.
