was recently getting a ticking noise from the engine at idle...wasnt really noticeable from inside the car. over that last couple days it became noticeable so I go looking for trouble. Noise is coming from under the timing belt cover. Removed the cover and notice that the lever on the roller is vibrating. So it seems the tensioner is doing a halfassed job of keeping tension on the roller..and the tick tick I heard was actually a countdown to the possible destruction of my engine. I was able to push down on that roller lever with little effort. Found this late yesterday afternoon so the car is parked.
Im wondering if its possible to change the tensioner without the whole sliding the front into service position deal? I think it might be able to but not quite sure...

u need a dampner, if ur in there that far might as well bite the bullet and do it all.
whats the case here? someone did a t-belt job and did not replace everything?

A dampner?
I actually did the tbelt job with a kit that included everything (belts, tensioner and roller, water pump and thermostat) probably 30-40000 miles ago.

I am assuming this is a 1.8t passat awm engine. If so the yes you should be able to do that dampner aka tensioner without pulling the front back( you can do the entire job without it but the crank pulley is the mf)

1.8t aftermarket kits generally dont include the dampner, its an addtl part youll need to purchace. some online companies might sell a more" complete" kit that includes the dampner. i always include it, even a minor timing belt service.

replaced the tensioner yesterday without pulling the front out but that bottom bolt on the tensioner was being an ex-wife coming out and going back in..backside of my hand is a little red from being wedged up against the fan housing but that hella-noise is now gone.
