We're 2 hours away in Raleigh, but we have an '84 Jetta TD! We've been following your rebuild on vwdiesel. We've got ours going as well. Always nice to see another TD around :)

Hows the MPG on the new ones? My parents has got an 09 but i believe they changed some stuff from 09' to 11' im still learning about the newer stuff from 09'

Once you get some millage on that car you should start seeing the MPG's go UP!

But on my rebuild i have been waiting on the machine shop to finish my Cyl. Head for almost 2 months now :headfuck:

We should meet up or go to a GTG sometime when i get mine done!

Yeah there aren't many Mk1s around, and certainly fewer TDs. We did see blue Mk1 TD Jetta at Harris Teeter recently, which was pretty cool. There is also a regular blue Mk1 Jetta around...I think its an NA diesel, but it might be a gasser. Haven't gotten close enough to tell and its usually parked. Raleigh has a decent Mk1 crowd.

I know Baron VonZepplin is over in your neck of the woods. He's in Asheboro and has a TD caddy and a number of other VW diesels. He's a good guy (he's also on vwdiesel).

We have the full chronicle of our car on this site, the rebuild is all that's covered on vwdiesel, but we've had the car for 3 years now. Its an ongoing project but its a great car. We got 51mpg after the rebuild on a highway run doing 65-70 the whole way, so we could probably get higher. Pretty powerful, peppy, and fun for what it is. Good luck with yours!

I know Baron he is a good guy! full of knowledge! he is the one that located that head i got at the machine shop from a local junk yard in G-boro. $50 for a Un-cracked head! the original head had bigger than penny sized crackes in the injector bosses and between the valve seats... No good!

When you broke yours in did you give it hell or just knocked around under 2500 RPM? cause i just know they say to keep the Cyl pressure high on break-in

We've been driving it like we would normally, but getting on it a bit at times too. When it was nicer out, Bill would drive it to work and there was a part of his drive where he would lay down the pedal and spew out smoke. We have, I dunno...2-3k on the rebuild. So far its working great. Gotten no less than 43mpg on it, even around town (actually I think first fill-up might have been 41, but we're not sure if the tank was full either). Works great. Oil changes at 100, 500, 1000 miles, conventional 10w30 oil I believe (Rotella). Made the trip to SoWo in it, and pulled 43mpg keeping up (mostly :p) with a big turbo Mk4 and some other tuned cars, so can't complain too much. We were much more concerned with oil changes for break-in than anything else. But it certainly gets worked :)

Current project is getting the AC working again. Sucks driving that thing lately without it.

We had one crack in our head, but we got that fixed. Baron has found us bunches of parts. We got a hood, trunk, fender, and rear seat for our car from him when he went to the Gboro u-pull-it yard. He was around when we first got our Jetta so he's seen it come a long way. We got it for free from someone who had it (among about 6 other non-running cars) in his yard. Took 2 mk2 diesels too, one turbo, one NA. They were pretty junky so we parted them and scrapped the bodies. We had ours running for about a year and a half before pulling it apart for the rebuild. Compression numbers weren't too bad, but they weren't great. Leaking oil and IP likely.

I don't remember from your thread but are you getting a Giles pump?

Is yours using any oil lately? Are yall ever going to switch to syn. oil? Yeah on the AC topic i decided to delete mine lol thought i could get better fuel mileage with out a A/C compressor on there.

Im not going to run a Giles pump... Although i would really love to. I just dont want to spend all that money on a IP when i can tune mine close to where the Giles are at... Well thats what i think :)
Although mine did smoke alot right before i started the rebuild i had the max fuel screw turned in so far it started to runaway on me!!! EKK and i have taken a shim out of the advance spring at the bottom of the pump. Also Grinded some on the LDA

I need to start updating that rebuild thread again. I havnt posted anything in forever!

Not using much oil...still have some tiny leaks that show themselves at times, but in general, its pretty good. We'll switch to synth a bit later, but to break it in, you need to run conventional.

Giles works some crazy voodoo magic on these pumps. I've heard he puts components from TDI IPs in there and such. Its really worth every penny to get one from him. We haven't touched it at all since we put it on (other than timing it) and its perfect. Combined with our fresh rebuild and 2.5" exhaust...we want to dyno it. We're thinking it gets close to stock TDI numbers. I'd start saving up to get one of his pumps. You can do mods to it, but you won't get it to where he puts it.

We're willing to risk a few MPGs on the AC. Its too gross here during the summer. After getting stuck in 1.5 hour traffic coming back from SoWo, we really got motivated to get the AC done. Its not being driven right now at all...the cars with AC are the cars of choice. The rebuild helped with its cold-weather starting and the heat is working again. Get the AC working (we're converting to 134-a) and its a great car all year round :)

Did you use the stock down pipe of fab yall's own 2.5" DP? Maybe pictures on your build thread? Im going to fab me a 2.5" DP that will be a fun project. Tack weld everything lol

With the A/C if its going to be 100 like it has been latly i will drive my 1999.5 Jetta its got amazing A/C.

I might just spend the money one day and buy me a Giles pump! they can probably put what ever components you want in there if you ask for enough money ;) well ofcourse out of a VE pump.

How much advance are you running yalls IP?

Everything on the exhaust is custom. We had a shop here in Raleigh do it all for us...they have a mandrel bender so that was pretty sweet. Its 2.5" from the turbo all the way to the back and cheaper than the Techtonics kit (which would have been a 2.25" DP). We have a Borla muffler and resonator to try to keep the noise at a reasonable level. Looks and sounds stock but EGTs are lower now and throttle response is improved. Just one more thing that helped wake the car up. Pics are in our rebuild thread here: http://www.forums.ncdubs.org/showthread.php?t=11115&page=9

I would save up for a pump. He can do whatever you want based on what you want out of it. Anything out of his normal builds he will charge accordingly. Doing the deal when you can get a good exchange rate helps too, as he charges CAD. Its $950CAD for a performance TD pump rebuild.

We're running the pump at .95. He said to run it from .9-.95. It didn't run so well at .9 so we bumped it up to .95 and it runs great now. Not sure on really any other specs...Bill knows more about that than I do. Fuel screw can be turned down a smidge...you can definitely smell the exhaust.

Mines is going to be 2.5" straight pipe all the way out! its not that loud the turbo makes it quite. The turbo is the best muffler! my 1999.5 is straight pipe with EGR delete and its still pretty quite!

I think im deff. gonna save up for a Giles injector pump!

I Thought he likes to run his pump a 1.00 or 1.05
im going to go read your build thread tonight

He builds in advance on his pumps. Might also be different for NA vs. TD pumps and such, but he said .9-.95. No more because of the advance he builds in to them.
