went to the pick n pull today to try and source a cargo cover, but no luck. Found one b3 wagon and 2 b4 sedans. Nothing of use in them to me. I did decide to go looking through a eurovan and found some sweet switches that match the b3.

I think the first one is a sport mode switch, and the other is ASR/TCS. idk why it would have traction control, b/c it only had a 2.3l 4-banger in there. Talk about slow lol.
O yea, I also took the old girl up to Hubert last Thursday and saw this: http://www.forums.ncdubs.org/picture.php?albumid=92&pictureid=3482
It was pretty close, when I filled up I calculated 27.2 mpg. I know it can do better because she always runs rich. I think I'm gonna try to space the air filter away from the MAF and see if that helps.

I saw a B6 A4, idk if it's new or not. I wanna go back and grab a B4 center console. The one I saw was missing the lid, and I didn't check there other one.

Just put in a B4 center console. Just need a lid for it, and the back piece that covers the rear cupholder.

Had you thought about converting to manual seatbelts? I think someone posted on vortex that the b4 brake lights are a direct replacement too..and the cabin air filter holder on the b4.
How complete was that b6 A4?

I actually like the auto seatbelt, because I had one in my first car that helped me out a couple of times.
I read your thread on the vortex about what can swap over, and although the tails seem like a good idea, there are no b4 wagons in the yard. I might pull the hatch lights on the b3 wagon and paint the clear sections amber, or I might paint the amber and clear red so I have all red tails. idk about the cabin air filter... my air smells pretty clean and not mildewy so I'll leave it be for now.
The Audi was pretty fresh, only some interior parts had been pulled. It might have been an A6 tho, idk all those generation audis are fat and look the same.

I might take a closer look at the tails..I think they may be the same for both the wagon and sedan. B4 looks alot cleaner without the black outline on the b3s.
Hunter
August 22nd, 2011, 09:03 PM
I'm quite sure that sedan and wagon tails are completely different. You could probably easily modify them to fit, but I saw the pic of that red wagon that guy posted in ur thread and it made me just just prefer the look of the B3. It works alright in lighter colors imo, but with darker colors it would make the b3 rear look funkier than it is

Installed the radar detector yesterday, also cleaned some trash out. I also tried to diagnose why the overhead lights aren't working while wiring in the radar to its circuit, and I have ignition switched power at pin 1, my positive source for the radar, and I had a good ground at pin 4, my ground for the radar. Radar works flawlessly, but still no overhead lights. Tried new bulbs as both seemed bad (one def. was), nothing still. Basically I guess my question is, what are pins 2 & 3 for? I think one would be for a door open switch, but idk which one, and I don't know what the other wire is. Anyone got a B3 Passat Bentley?

I've also been browsing the B3 classifieds on VWVortex; came across a set of these for $120 shipped:

score. as long as I don't get ripped off by the seller. The price is a bit too good to be true.

hahaha the hurricane was like, fuck your clearcoat. The wind and rain actually tore it up pretty good. I need to do something about paint soon.
Hella DE headlights and smoked euro corners should be here Tuesday, according to FedEx. Not gonna install them until I get some HID's ordered and wired up, and figure what exactly to do about the wiring. I might just leave out the high beams for now so they'll basically be plug and play with the hid kit. I'll relay the highs later on down the road if I need them.

http://www.forums.ncdubs.org/picture.php?albumid=92&pictureid=3494
They're pretty beat up, but they'll work. I need to epoxy a couple of spots for strength on the covers, but other than that, lenses are crack free, adjusters all work, and the wiring is pre-hacked for relays (yay cuz that's what I was gonna do.) Overall I think It was a good purchase considering I got them shipped to my door for less than the price of some Depo E-codes from ebay. I might install them today, I might not...

I had to do something about the light output. Just relaying the stock lights wouldn't have been good enough for me. These are considerably brighter even with some cheap ass H1's in the lows. I'll be putting in a DDM HID kit here in a week or two. I also agree with you about how it junks the front, but I think maybe color matching the surrounds might help. I'll probably pick up a set of Depo E-Codes sometime in the future so I can swap them out when I want a cleaner look vs. less light.

Paint the surrounds and call it a day... Or ecodes.... Your really doing this instead of ecode+hid? With the hid
's you're not worrying about light output....
Hunter
August 31st, 2011, 05:17 PM
Mike- I agree it looked cleaner before, that's why I'm going to pick up a set of e-codes for when I want to show the car off, but right now I am purely looking for the most light output possible. Projectors + 55w HID should get me there.
I'm gonna paint the surrounds and see how much that cleans it up... but I went with these cuz I've wanted HID's for awhile, and the stock lights don't really retrofit well because the fluted lenses on the DOT lights and the E-codes would fuck with the sharp cutoff that I'm looking for. You can't get clear lenses for the B3, only B4. With the dual rounds, the glass in front of the projector is clear, not fluted. Another advantage to these lights is that the projectors themselves already have clear lenses, unlike the fresnel lenses in all VW fogs and most other projector headlights.
Jake- I wouldn't ever put HID's in an E-code. Don't ever put HID's in a reflector housing, even if they are E-codes. They will glare. Some people will say the same about projectors designed for halogen lights (such as these) but time and pictures on the interwebz have proven this false.
edit: see all the light above the cutoff? no bueno.

not exactly sure what happened to the driver side fog last nite, but it is no longer there. I think it was a MKIII projector and shroud retrofit gone wrong, because all that's left is the housing and lens lol. I'm sure the projector and bulb are shattered on the road somewhere.

Haven't updated this in awhile. Since last time I posted:
-amp driving the component speakers died.
-found two vacuum leaks, one on the evap purge line, one on the TB.
-timing chain rattles like a bitch
So this morning I did a compression test to find out whether the motor was worth putting a chain kit on. No bueno.
Cyl. 1- Completely dead ~ 50psi
Every other cylinder except #4 has low compression (120-130psi) Bentley spec is between 140-190. Cyl. 4 ~155psi. I suppose most of the low compression numbers could be caused by the loose chain, but #1 is done. Did a leak down test on #1, and it's either a burnt valve or a headgasket.

Gonna find me another OBDI VR to put in it, hopefully I can get a good deal on one that needs some work, and build while I drive the one in the wagon into the ground. Either that or hunt down a pre-built OBDI VR that's ready for another 250k.

so the passenger side auto seatbelt decided to take a shit today... funny thing is that I was expecting the drivers side to quit first because it has been getting slower and weaker over the past month. Time to look into a manual belt setup.
Hunter

In the past month the passenger side auto belt decided it would like to work again... yay for things fixing themselves! As soon as taxes came, I got the crappy tint pulled off, so I'm rolling fishbowl now and I like it! I also got a new amp for the components so now I have musica... just waiting on a cargo cover from Tom so I can get my sub re-installed in it's fresh new sealed box. I bought some wood for a hardwood cargo area, and will have enough left over to either do a friends car or do hardwood footwells (got this idea from the VIP scene)...still debating on what to do there. I also bought a crack free center dash bezel (mine is cracked bad in four places).
Goodies for the VR6 rebuild are in... the new motor is torn down awaiting paint and reassembly, then the swap process begins.
O yea... today I added some mud flaps!

When I was first dissasembiling the block I was interested to find out what the intermediate shaft did, other than just providing a change in gearing. I was surprised to find out that it drives the oil via via two shafts that are connected by a gear like you commonly see on a distributor:
