View Full Version : ABS Wire... who knows what's up?

I had Evan do some work to my GTI yesterday and he noticed the ABS wires on the passenger side had been rubbing against the tire for a while, and have managed to wear all the way down to the metal wire itself... I assume they were left loose when I had some suspension work done at another local shop  :x2fu:
All that aside, has anyone dealt with replacing these wires before (Passenger side) and know what is involved? I assume the worst thing that can happen is that, down the road, the wire will fail, and my ABS won't work. Am I a moron for leaving it be until that happens?

Just make sure you unplug it before doing any suspension work, and makes sure it attached/ziptied to the new strut and out of the way of the wheel, brake rotor, spring, etc.
BE VERY CAREFUL if you do it yourself, since you have to splice wires and solder.
who did your suspension??

So, from that vortex thread, it seems that it is possible to just splice the wires together IF they separate... I guess it is a single wire, not like a coaxial... If I can find a way to re-wrap them and cover the exposed metal with some sort of rubber and keep them from degrading any further, maybe it won't be an issue. I am just glad that Evan caught it before it was too late.

The wire came out of the mount on the strut body, rubbed against the tire. I fixed it myself though. Spliced soldered and then resealed the casing.
Since mine has yet to tear apart, I am just going to seal the casing and hope for the best... Thanks for the link

silicone tape...self bonding, water tight, and no stickyness involved
can be had for cheap on ebay or maybe radio shack or an electronics store
vw makes repair kits for that harness...you should make bfi deduct the amount of it from their profits ;)

chubby one. hehe.... funny:lol2-blue: anyway you can buy friction tape from a local auto parts store for like 4$. If the light doesn't come on then rewrap it and secure it away from the tire.
