Hey guys, the 1,8t forum seems like the place to go to ask turbo questions - so here goes.

What do you guys think of this turbo:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/T3-T4-T04E-60-TRIM-W-63-AR-TURBO-WITH-WASTEGATE-DSM_W0QQitemZ8076495773QQihZ019QQcategoryZ33742QQr dZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Application would be 2.0L 16v.

Seems like a damn good deal - is it too good to be true?

buy cheap shit...get cheap shit

only buy garrett turbochargers...and make sure it says garrett and/or has a garrett tag on it..do not buy anything that says uses garrett components

Did you follow the link? Some input would be nice...

"buy cheap shit...get cheap shit" doesnt really help me at all. Seems like a good deal to me, 6mo warrany and all, v-band, gaskets, etc..

But I dont know shit about selecting a turbo or what to look for/what to avoid.

well..theres a reason why that turbo w/ a vband adapter only costs $260 when a vband adapter alone costs around $100 from atp/whoever

a good quality, new turbocharger will cost $500+

Good point - I wonder what the weakpoints are in these 'ebay turbos'?

Weren't you telling me that the Boost Factory was a good place to buy one from?

When looking at used t3's is there anything to stay away from besides the obvious?

Which t3 would you reccomend for a 16vt?

the weak points? they use garbage instead of quality parts to build them...same w/ anything else thats "cheap", the quality of the materials

bf or rippinralf are both good ppl to get turbos from

but theyre going to be $$ compared to what youre looking to spend total im sure

the bigger the a/r on the compressor the more air its going to flow..the bigger the a/r on the turbine the longer its going to take to spool

and the obvious point, the bigger the turbo, the longer its going to take to spool

a t3/t4 w/ a .63 a/r turbine is going to take longer to spool than a t3 w/ a .63 a/r turbine (ex: super 60) because of the larger compressor..there are also turbo "trims"..its basically a ratio between the inducer and the exducer on the compressor side...bigger the trim, the more air its going to flow

most used t3's that came off a car, (saab, volvo) are going to be .48 a/r...not sure what they the compressor a/r or trim is

when looking @ used t3's make sure to get one w/ a "standard" t3 flange..the rectangle flange like the turbo in the link you posted...would also be a good thing to look for the "standard" 3 bolt discharge and to make sure it comes w/ a wastegate

i posted a link yesterday to one w/ a 3 bolt discharge

recommended turbo? t3 super 60...quick spool and decent top end and assuming your set up can handle it (compression ratio, fueling, intercooler set up) you could run 20+ psi daily

Awesome, thanks dude!

Another question - say I were to find one of these dime-a-dozen ford, saab, etc turbos and when it arrives I determine it needs a rebuild - how much does something like that run usually?

a4wdhybrid
June 23rd, 2006, 09:39 AM
you could rebuild it yourself for $70 and maybe an hour or two of your time

its not going to be balanced like it should or like it would be if you had it done by a shop that rebuilds turbos

but for $70+the cost of the turbo+beating the shit out of it till its finally "done" is going to be a better deal than paying to have it rebuilt

if you were to pay someone to have it rebuilt then you might as well buy a new one

Awesome - looks like decent t3's are going for under $100 all day long.

And $70 is cheap!

So, in the world of junkyard turbos - is there any particular model you'd reccomend for the 16v? Saab, Volvo, Ford, etc? Im sure they all had their own unique specs, I'd like to find the one that is best suited for my application though.

Low spool (well, like 3-3.5k RPM would be nice), and some decent top end would be nice. Something that will not give me problems @15psi or so, and something with an internal WG.

Thanks agian Ian:)

a good used t3 should be around $150 or so

thats going a bit beyond my knowledge..i dont know specifics like that

you should look for a flange like this turbo has...it has a "standard" t3 flange:

http://i16.ebayimg.com/03/i/07/78/27/dd_1.JPG

and the discharge flange on this one is a good thing to look for..it has a "standard" 3 bolt discharge:

http://i4.ebayimg.com/05/i/07/7c/da/07_1.JPG

however..if you look @ this pic...you can see it uses a 4 bolt inlet but it has a rounded inlet..several companies used this on their cars..not sure why...if you could find a good deal on a turbo w/ that flange it really wouldnt be that big of a deal, you can find a "rectangle" > "round" adapter...atp sells them...thats just that much for $$ to spend and 1 more part to buy:

http://i6.ebayimg.com/01/i/07/7a/58/f2_1.JPG

any t3 should give you spool around where youd like it and all will do fine @ 15psi...a super 60 is going to be hard to find used though and a new one will be around $500-600 but it will give you decent spool and will take longer to run out of breath than any used, "stock" t3

some old nissan 300zx single turbo cars used a turbo that was basically a super 60..but theyre going to be really hard to find used..just not many of them out there

youre going to need a bit more than just a turbo to transform olga in to "turbo olga"

You can get rebuilt t3 super 60s for around 450 iirc.

Most rebuilding places will charge around 200 for a rebuild, port and or clipping, balancing and warranty included from what I've seen as of late.

Alot of the ebay turbos are really poorly made and designed. While they look good on paper, they suck at blowing.
Several of the xs power or ssautochrome boast garret or garret like internals. Most of them the compressor housing is glued to the center section..

It's alot of crap basically.

ORLY?

Isn't there a local place that does it? I seem to remember seeing something about a local company that does rebuilds a few years back...

June 23rd, 2006, 01:50 PM
the guy @ turbotune im sure would do it for you

or theres a place near charlotte that can do it i think

id stay away from buying a rebuilt turbo..even w/ a warranty, balanced and such..im sort of biased though..i just prefer new anways..no matter what it is (assuming i can afford new)

id buy new or buy used and run the shit out of it till its cooked and just buy another one or if its rebuildable @ all then rebuild it yourself and run the shit out of it again

Great minds think alike:)

Lemme know if you guys come across anything good in your internet adventures, I'm keepin my eye on ebay and vortex.:)

I have to agree with ian on the used/rebuilt turbos. Getting a turbo rebuilt should include a balancing and other services, otherwise buy the rebuild kit and save money.

I was looking into getting a k03 rebuilt and here is what I was quoted

Hello....Thank you for your interest. Yes, we can upgrade the K03 turbo and install a K04 compressor wheel. Along with any upgrade, we do recommend a fresh rebuild too, because of the added stress of the new wheel. So, a standard rebuild (a rebuild that does not require any hard parts: turbine shaft/wheel, or bearing housing) for your turbo is $230, and the price for the new wheel and the machining required is $170, for a total of $400 + shipping. The price for the port and polish for the turbine housing would be $100.00.

why would you want to go from a 16v to an 8v?

cuz it has 8 less valves so its a lighter engine.....DUH
