I really hate to ask this of everyone but I think I am going to need some help!

Heres what I know has to be done,

1.I need to hone out the cylinder walls on the block and then check with a gauge to make sure we are within specs! I have no hone brush!

2. I have to check the piston rings and make sure they are within specs or if I need new ones!

3. I need to check rod bushings and make sure I dont need new ones!

4. I need to check the crank with a gauge and make sure it is within specs along with crank bushings!

5. Once all this is done and it checks out I need to start putting my bottom end back together.

6. If all goes well and it doesnt take long maybe we can put the head back on .

My dad has all the tools except the hone brush, he is working 6/12-14 hour days out of town and my car is sitting and has been for a while, he is supposed to help me but is working too much!

I know some of you guys have built engines from scratch and have done this before so it might go quick for you, I haven't so I need help!

The car is in Lumberton right off of I-95 on the Carthage Rd. exit, can anyone help! When I get a good list, I will set a weekend when a few people come out!
I can supply you with some food and we can crash at my parents house, they have a few spare beds! I have to drive 2 hours from my house too!
No raging kegers but we can drink some beer as long as it doesnt get too wild! I'm too old for raging keggers!
If I can think of anything else I will post it but I think this is all I need help with!

LMK guys. Thanks!:upyeah:

you just need the hone brush? do you have a drill or something to use it?

you'll need a feeler gauge and a micrometer to check the other stuff...

when were you wanting to do this? it's quite a haul from raleigh..

edit:
dont forget to plastigauge..

Yeah Dexter047 was talking about coming down too hes in Raleigh it may be better to car pool!
18v dewalt should work!

I know he has a micrometer but I'm not sure about the feeler gauge is that the flat metal tabs you stick between the ring and the grove on the piston? I have no idea what a plastiguage is, How long does it take from Raleigh? Its a straight shot on I-95 once you get to it.
I'll call tonight and see if he has it? I was hoping on May 19th to start but its up to who ever can help!

feeler gauge is flat metal things.

plastigauge is put b/w the crank and main/rod beaings to check bearing clearance. you could just wait until you are building it, but that would put you in a weird spot, potenitally stopping the build up. i guess you could use the micrometer on the crank and the bearings should be ok.. but definitely plastigauge (to double check) when you're putting the engine together.

it's probably 45 minutes from where i live to I95/Benson... dunno how far past that you are... probably ~2hrs total

the amount of bottom end work you are talking about seems like you need to take it to a machine shop and have some things checked out.Alot of the parts you want to have checked involve quite a few specialty measuring tools. You may have a micrometer but they come in a ton of different sizes and applications. Are you saying you want to reuse the old piston rings if they are still in spec? Bad idea IMO. It's not worth the time and effort to put old parts back in the motor. crank bushings? I have a few motors I am about to start putting back together and need to have my tools here for the assembly. I hate to be the bearer of bad news but it seems like you have a ways to go before you can reassemble the motor.

I have some plastigage I can donate, for measuring clearances b/w 0.001"-.003" which should be the right size range you'd need, have an extra set of instructions too, not hard to do once you've tried it. I'm going to say the most time-consuming part is the measurements & determination of what you need to change or not; then you'd need to order parts which will take several days. The assembly process once everything is laid out & measured is fairly straightforward; you might want to split this up into three parts; 1. Measuring, generate parts list; 2. honing, machining, bushing installation; 3. Assembly. Part #1 may tell you that honing is not enough, maybe you'll need to machine to the next size piston, now your cost is going up fast. If it's just a daily driver & parts are good enough (ie. within wear limits) then new bearings, rings, & seals/gaskets along w/ a basic honing of cylinders will be acceptable. People could be more open to doing this in steps; I realize you're antsy to get going but as Gerich said, you might want to do some prep work first before throwing everything together, people may be able to supply time in smaller increments. Just an idea. By the way, what engine???

Its a 9a 2.0l from a pasat and it only had 60k on the motor when the guy wrecked the car, I just want to check everything and make sure its good,I really want to put it together but I am up for doing this in stages.

The plastigauge would help a ton my dad wanted me to pull the crank out and check it, add on a couple of more hours if I do that.
The honing brush to me was to only knock off any galze or inperfections on the cylinder walls to give the rings a good surface! Once the honing was done I wanted to check them(cylinder wall) and then do the ordering if need be, but would rather go with a bigger ring instead of new pistons and boring the block to 1-over!
The hardest part to me is all the measuring and checking the specs.
I would love to go with all new parts but cant afford it plus I thought it would be ok with only 60k on it.
Oh and my dad is an aircraft mechanic so he has a ton of tools and gauges to play with!

Last I knew you could buy plastigauges at most auto parts stores. Just want to make sure my mind isn't gone your taking about the red and blue plastic rods to check and see if you need oversized bearings and such.

dood I think autozone has the dingleberry hone as a loaner tool in a few different sizes.

I'm with gerich on the rings, don't reuse them man.

Cool yeah I was reading the Hayes last night on the rebuild trying to make sure I was reading it right and it says the same thing, I cant get rings till I hone the cylinders walls though, so its a wait and see game right now!

The noen will be sold within the next couple of weeks and the money will be here for new bearings, new rings also I am trying to get the guy who did my head at the machine shop to go thru the pile of parts and the block. Its going to cost me 250 but it is probally worth it!

I see you didnt get the rims Cameron, but it was worth a try, I have the guy in my favorites so if anything else comes up I'll PM you.

I want my Bently back, but its living with the car.
I read the Hayes like a preacher does a bible!

2.0l 16v thanks for the offer, but I had an 8v and I would have to say never again unless its a g60 8v with a digi-1 and a lyscom super charger!

I am looking for rings and having a hard time telling the difference between the 1.8l and the 2.0l they only list as 16v and 8v. here is a link I found:

http://www.trademotion.com/partlocator/index.cfm?action=getLocator&siteid=214086&chapter=EMA500&appSectionid=10&groupid=10044&subgroupid=61307&componentid=0&make=35&model=Jetta&year=1991&graphicID=E500035&callout=19&catalogid=1

Can you guys help? I dont want to get O/S just yet cause the block is in good shape and the hone is only being used to knock off the glaze, If we do it right we shouldnt need O/S rings.

i can get you rings if you want...

the ones you want are 82.5mm (standard bore), but dunno what the proper thing is on that site.

PM me with a price and I may need a price for O/S too, I am going to need a full set of just rings, my dad is looking at his house too so I'll let you know.
It weird one website had them for 34.95 per piston and this one is 90-121 for the whole set.

Thanks Pinky.;)

My engine just got loaded at 8:45 pm to go to the machinist, things going to be sweet when I get it back, I'll post an update with pictures when I get it back.

Then get ready:Its Pig Pickin Time.

We already have the cooker lined up with a 100lb pig and the Keg will be ordered a few days before hand. I will set a date and anyone who wants to help to put HUMPTY DUMPTY back together will get fed and drunk on Me!:upyeah:

I dont want to Jinx myself because everytime time I mention that I'm working on my car something comes up BUT!

Its on, like a pot of neckbones! Its on like Donkey Kong! Its F-N on!

I am going up Friday night and going to work till Sunday night to get all the above listed done.
with any luck the engine will be back together and ready to be droped by Monday.

Thats in an perfect world. If I dont need pistons, bearings, over sized anything,ect....

Knock on wood and cross your fingers, toes, balls, legs and arms cause I'm going to need all the good luck I can get!:ohyeah:

Ok most of this stuff on the old list has been done but I'm thinking If I could get a little help I could install the engine this weekend.
Heres a new list,

1. find out the size belts needed for the alt, water pump ect.. since the a/c has been removed.
2. paint lower subframe and install
3. Flange exhaust manifold so the bracket doest come thru
4. install exhaust manifold
5. install coolant hoses
6. install pressure plate, throw out bearing, and bolt in starter
7. drop in motor
8. start pluging up wiring engine harness
9. install new grounds for the digifant

I will, were getting close, If we can get the belt sizes down and my dad paints the sub-frame tommrow well be seting the engine Sat. night.

I have to acquire some new ground wires sat night, going to redo all the grounds in the bay.

werd... yeah man what about just using that one alt bracket thats longer and wider so you can use the stock belt size on the set-up?
