so i was going to sell it but i dont really feel like selling this one and going through the hassle of finding a spearco core that is the size i want...and after comparing pics of the internals of this core w/ a treadstone core..im content w/ this one

i have metal to make brackets and some hardware..i just need a welder *hint hint nudge nudge...drew* or anyone else for that matter that is willing to let me pimp the welder for a couple hours..

I suppose the only difference in the big name spearco/precision cores is the density of the openings from the endtanks. This allows you to use a smaller core but still get the efficiency. The way I see it, the nice thing about the tube and fin cores are the fact that they allow quite a bit of flow past the core to the radiator, which is good. I'd still like to open up my bumper a bit since I'm hiding a good 4.5 inches of core behind the bumper. Its just waiting to get hacked up all the way to the rubstrip. BillyT style just like this

i remember seeing that car in an import magazine back in the day

opening your bumper up would prob be a good idea since that core is only 2 3/8" thick

tube/fin are less effecient than bar/plate and these cars dont seem to have a prob holding a good coolant temp..oil temps are the only thing i worry about...since our motors generate soo much heat

oh..and while im thinking about it..travis...that boost controller isnt holding a constant psi..it was holding good @ 17psi..now in 1st and 2nd gear it will shoot towards 20, while 3rd will only make 15psi sometimes

im not done yet..taking a break...i still have to connect the piping and put my bumper back on

i was trying to weld w/ just some latex gloves on..that didnt work out too well..i had to resort to real gloves :smack:

might be going back to my old set up...

boost controller woes....this morn on the way to work...3rd gear...17psi till 6k...roll out of the throttle..slow down a few rpms...roll back into the throttle...14psi this time

and not sure if this core is too small..too restrictive..or what...my spool is beyond terrible now...and i was hoping for a quicker spool w/ the smaller core...i dont get it

i think im going back to my old cheap $10 ebay mbc and my old core...

doesnt it suck to have that time/$ go down in the drain only to go back to your other setup. I thought that only happened to me:smack:

any leaks in the system? Which reminds me, I have to get that hardware worked out that jason gave me so I can build that pressure tester. I KNOW I'm losing some psi somewhere.

no leaks..the boost was acting screwy before i did the core

and i really dont think its a leak since it makes more boost than what it was set @...no rhyme or reason behind it

im going back to my old $10 ebay mbc since it seemed to work fine and im going back to my old core for the time being...looks like we came to the conclusion the new one doesnt flow enough

so i have a forge mbc (assuming i dont strap a stick of dynamite to it first...since i have to be very careful when i roll into it @ all since boost skyrockets) and a bar/plate core for sale...core would be perfect for a k03 car

isn't the length and curvature of piping bigger factor than core size in how quickly you spool? i guess the only thing to worry about bigger core would be a pressure drop??

some ppl say tubing size has a lot to do w/ it and some say it doesnt affect it very much

801pete said 2.5" shouldnt cause a lack of spool while on the other hand there was a post made on vortex a month or two ago from a guy saying he switched to 2.5" tubing and he saw a longer spool time w/ higher top end power...so each car is prob different

i ran the same set up for almost 2 years, 2.5" plumbing w/ a johnny race car tube/fin core

w/ a k03 i saw no loss of spool..(none that i know of anyways..i didnt pay super attention to those things back then) and about a 2psi pressure drop post intercooler install...the ecu adapted that back by keeping the wastegate closed longer so in the end there was no loss of boost

too big of a core w/ too small of a turbo will cause a pressure drop...too small of a core w/ too big of a turbo causes a restriction (i think thats whats happening w/ mine)...they can only flow so much air...i was hoping this one would work out ok..guess not..but i think i already sold it..so its back to the drawing board..less than 2 weeks to go...i have got to get my ish together...630's will be here shortly and some plumbing pieces will be here weds..so i might be seeing 20+psi here shortly...eff 16..16 is weak

gotcha. i would think that length of piping might actually play a bigger part than diameter (say stock smic vs any fmic spool time), but then again there are so many other factors that it is impossible to say for certain. smaller diameter piping will definetly give you bigger fluid velocity at the expense of limiting volume. i guess optimization or trial and error what you are doing should give you the answer and biggest powah

its very much a give and take situation

thanks..i need it

Ian I woud think you should try a bottom to top flow if you wan to do something different. They flow so much better since the tubes are shorter but still cool ok since there are more tubes.
I was even looking at trying this crap for my next project.

i have thought about but i have no clue how id ever plumb something like that...bye bye bumper..

those sidemounts not enough or are we talking fwd stuff here?

evan@absolute

the sidemounts are plenty. This is for the fwd.

If you do the top to bottom, you could get one of the "z" cores.

that's why I said piece of crap. It is soooo cheap it's hard not to try it though.

so i spent $150 on the core currently on my car

maybe $15 on the mounting hardware and a couple hours to fab it all up..no biggie really..it was fairly straight forward

sold it (i think) for $180

turned right around and bought this guy.. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/INTERCOOLER-Subaru-WRX-STI-Eclipse-Civic-Focus-BM10-25_W0QQitemZ180005451022QQihZ008QQcategoryZ33742QQ rdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

seeing 12 days on the screen got me nervous

the 630s will hopefully be here this week and some plumbing for an intake will be here tomorrow :gt-ogb-spank:

i dont know why i have to learn the hardway every single time :smack:

congrats on the nice core...did you price this directly from treadstone before you bought it, they have a very well laid out site with lots of info on dimensions, applications, etc.

Cant wait to see it after you get the injectors in...

July 11th, 2006, 11:28 PM
thanks

i have browsed treadstones site before..i looked @ it yesterday for a min..the ones on ebay seemed to be the best deals..they appear to be the most bang for the buck either way though..

i have a feeling this thing is going to be massive

mike h's old core was only 20x10x3..he upgraded to a 24x10.3x3.5 though

i want to see what a safe 20+psi from this thing feels like..

it looks as if 10.5" is going to be cutting it very close to even being able to literally fit my bumper back on..not a matter of how much trimming..literally..not sure if its going to fit over it...so i might be back to the drawing board a fourth time :smack:

anyways...more random stuff..i got a new snake ;) ...a cobra hose and a 4">3" reducing insert

yeah the snake in my pants is defiantly not reducing because of my pants party:gt-ogb-spank:
