View Full Version : 06 GLI resinator removed

I removed my resinator the other day. Notice a slight increase in power in the top end and after a day or two of breaking the pipe in it sounds much much better. Before I couldn't really hear the car idle and pretty quiet running down the road. Now it purs nicely and is deeper and a lil louder running down the road. It's how the car should have sounded from VW. Damn restrictions! :thumbsdown2:

Are there one or two resonators on the MKV?

One really large one a foot or so before the muffler. It's like a second muffler. Especially in size.

Kick-ass. That's a weight reduction too! :oddeye-hellyeah:

I replaced the "noise making pipe" that comes off the intercooler to throttle body pipe with one from the A3 for $32. Got rid of that dumb plastic pipe plumbed into the firewall. You got any pics of that resonator removed? How much did that run you?

What did that do for the car? I'm learning about turbo cars. lol No pics or sound clips yet but i'll get it. I went to meineke on market for 40bucks. Not bad. I knew the guys brother in-law.

It took that long heater core looking piping off the intake tube between the throttle body and intercooler outlet. It runs inside the firewall and I guess it's supposed to plumb some of the engine intake sound into the car. I'd say it gets rid of turbulence created in the intake. It seemed to help the throttle response some. Just put a K&N drop in filter in. That intake setup is crazy. No fun to take off or put on. Better to have another friend pull on one side while you pull on the other side. Eurojet racing sells a chromed one for looks, called the EA pipe. Complete waste of money, but they have an awesome looking intercooler set up for $900. www.20squared.com

So it's a decent lil upgrade that's recommended then?

Yea, for $32. It seems like it just makes good sense for that junk to not be there. I put the K&N drop in it today. Sounds much better. What a pita intake design. For about $110, you can make a noticeable difference in this car's performance with the resonator in the exhaust removed along with these two things.

For $32, I don't see where you can go wrong. It's a huge resonator on the intake (biggest I've ever seen). Now to get that thing out of my exhaust. :D

Well what about warrenty issuse? will putting the A3 one on effect it? and the filter? The dealership has got me not wanting to change anything for awhile

It's a VW part!! They would have to prove that whatever you have replaced caused something to fail. The Magnesson Act covers all that. Hey, if you or anyone else here with a MKV don't know, you gotta go join www.golfmkv.com/forums make sure you put my name there (Wantagti) as the member who referred you. They're having a referral contest and I also think it's the best site out for MKV folks.

Duh. I have it as a fav so I haven't typed the address in a while. Fixed. Getting my resonator removed today for $40. Looking forward to a different sound, heck it's so quiet, anything will be a sound.

I must be getting old. It sounds good I guess, but it announces any intentions I might have. I really like the silent but deadly approach to be honest. I may have it put back on, but I'll ride it out for a while. Definitely cheaper than a catback.......

I'd love to hear it. I'm thinking about the DV spacer. Is it worth it and which do you have? adjustable or non?
mk5mike

I've gotten used to it and I'm leaving it off. It seems to be stronger in 3rd gear/4th gear. I ran a guy from a 2nd gear roll in a SRT4- before pipe removal and 87 octane- I had him by 2 cars to 80 when he went on by me. Ran in to him the other night and he wanted to go from 50 in 3rd because he said he had seen 20psi on his gauge. I got a slight jump, which one of you does anyway, but I pulled him all the way into 4th gear. I think he was expecting an easy win based on our last run........:D

so a slight increase in power in 3-4th? might be in my more near future. wonder what the DSG "fart" would sound like without the res.

Mieneki(sp?) on market street for 40 bucks I think. The manager (name I can't remember) knew some people I knew and did it i like 20-30mins. He was kinda a taller chunky guys. Real nice. They have a store across from logans too. The manager there is Dan. He'll do it around the same price but not as cool of a guy.

you r better off taking the whole system off and have them weld it off the car. but yeah the sound was amazing when i took off the rear muffler on my car. loved it. on mk4s they have a resontaor but you better off taking the muffler off. do what matt has buy a downpipe from ebay for cheap any size you want and if you have to put a cat on after that but have a shop weld the straight section on so all you have to do after that is add the rear section of your choice or have a custom one built. right now on the mk5 i have a decated sotck downpipe with a test pipe and 2.5inch pipe and a three inch wide open series muffler from magnaflow and turn down and dumps out to the drivers side of the gas tank under the car.
