Hey guys and gals,

So my buddy who loaned me his MkII golf to get to work incase my bug didn't get an oil pan replaced this weekend.... I noticed that his car's fuel pump is whinining loud enough to hear it with the engine running. I'm afraid thsi 89's about to stop moving. Advanced Auto Parts/Performance Cafe says the MkII has an in-tank and outside of tank pump, I'm going to guess the exterior pump is going?

The question I have is who do I buy it from, what's it gonna cost, and where is it? I wanna make sure this MkII is in good runnin shape for him, and he said he'd get the part if I put it on (I already replaced the AC/Alternator belts this weekend).

Thanks so much all you gurus!

i think the intank is the more common one of the two to fail..theyre easy to replace and not too expensive either

before you waste time replacing parts check the in tank pump. If it's bad it will make the external one loud.

if this set up is anything like a early volvo with cis. the intank pump has a short hose connecting it to a hard metal line. that hose will to rot with age and cause the system to pick up air and make the external pump noisy it can also make the car hesitate under high fuel demand. but more than likely the small in tank pump is dead. and be sure to buy local and hang on to your recipt as I have gotten more than one bad in tank pump, (oem parts even).

Replace fuel pumps in pairs. like was said earlier... if the in-tank one is struggling then it has already worn out the outside one. Don't go through the same mess 2x. On a related note, I've been waiting for about 5 years for my pumps to die. The outside one screams. I'll replace them this winter but when I do them I've got to replace the hard lines around the main pump as well so I'm obviously not looking forward to it.
