:) Now that our cars produce a little more power then stock . And the mileage starting to go above the 80k area. I have decided to freshen up couple of things in the engine. Better to be safe then sorry.
starting with pistons. I've been discussing things with IAn and he's been giving me advice. So far i've decided to go with.
the 144 mm scat rods and JE pistons. Any comments would be wonderful.

Ak-Abe

youre going to have to change the headgasket and bolts

considering you have to pull the head off to get the pistons/rods out :p

yeah man you need to stud the head.
????
do you mean the block for the head or do you mean those cam bearing caps that torque to 7flbs or whatever?

he probably meant put ARP head studs in so that he doesnt have to keep replacing those stupid bolts...

a4wdhybrid
July 27th, 2006, 12:56 PM
arp studs are not required unless you are actually planning on taking the head off and putting it back on several times over again...they also require to be retorqued after theyve been on for x amount of miles..which requires removal of the valve cover, ect..all in all just extra work/$$

if you are planning on doing it just this one time then stock bolts are fine

and fwiw, my car has stock head bolts

TurboMatt
July 27th, 2006, 01:40 PM
yeah i meant for the head. my boss was walking over here when i typed that.:oddeye-hellyeah:

By default I'm putting a list together right now of everything that should be replaced when doing this.

Btw, the engine has found a new home for the next week and its liking the ac in gerichs garage. We had a bit of fun last night taking all the accessories off and found the mud dobbers had taken up refuge behind the water pump. AEB Pistons and scat rods should be here late tomorrow/early monday and everything gets dropped off for the balancing. Depending on prices, the exhaust and intake ports are gonna get gasket-matched. Thoughts last night were to drop the block in the hot tank and possible throw it in the blasting cabinet? Also kicking around deleting the secondary air and anything else I can get away with come emissions time.

Looking forward to doing everything right this time. No more vacuum or boost leaks.....NO MORE EXCUSES, bitches.

Kevin, you keeping the same gt28r or going something bigger? I figured with forged internals you might as well, money permitting of course...

gerich
July 27th, 2006, 08:42 PM
I think Kevin will be able to see close to 300whp once the motor is done. If nothing else it should be reliable and consistent power once the motor and rest of the engine bay are cleaned up.

Yareka
July 27th, 2006, 09:09 PM
making way for more power:yum: . That was my plan ever since I changed out the mani and dp. Work out the kinks, log to make sure everything is in check, throw a rod....oh wait:beadygrinner: , and then be on the lookout for a gt2871r .64 hotside.

I wont be happy until I get 300 out of this setup though. I've got the software and hardware to support it. This engine with fresh pistons, rods, timing belt, and vacuum line rerouting should leave me with a brand new slate to work with.

I'll say this again, I wouldnt be at this point or any point in the future with this build up if it wasnt for my friends/members here.:upyeah:

I am cut/pasting from vortex. Everyone please feel free to edit and make changes so we can get a master list. I see a few of us going through this in the next year. Obviously, someone like Ian wouldnt need all of this since he didnt do a full engine buildup. Especially looking for advice from the experts here.

1st list
_____________
Rods/Pistons of course
water pump
head gasket kit
valve cover gasket kit (if necessary)
main cap bolts
crank pulley bolt
thermostat and o-ring
Main bearings
head bolts

timing belt
timing belt tensioner
timing belt tensioner roller
rear main seal
front main seal
gasket
coolant
oil (10 quarts of dino)
oil filter (x2)

second list
_____________
(1) head gasket
(20) valve seals
(2) camshaft seal
(2) crankshaft seal (front & rear)
(1) valve cover rubber gasket kit (comes as 2 pieces)
(10) Main bearings - comes as a set
(8) Connecting Rod Bearings
(1) Timing belt
(2) Timing belt Tensioner (roller & tensioner)
(1) water pump
(1) Thermostat & o-ring
(1) Set ARP Main studs
(1) Set ARP Head Studs

You will need the shmooo for the oil pan "gasket" and the front main seal housing. The rear main should come with the housing. If you can get a head gasket set it shoud come with all the valve guide seals, cam seals, cam chain tensioner seal/gasket,valve cover gasket and head gasket. I would put a new cam chain on as well. Not that much money for the piece of mind. Also while youre in there put some big cams in:oddeye-hellyeah: :oddeye-hellyeah: :oddeye-hellyeah: :oddeye-hellyeah: :oddeye-hellyeah: :oddeye-hellyeah: :oddeye-hellyeah:

I have a tube of schmoo somewhere.

Yareka
July 27th, 2006, 10:45 PM
you're not going to believe this but I actually added "oilpan sealant" to the list but didnt save it. I suppose a tube of schmoo would work in the right conditions:gt-bb-chongin:

damn that's a hell of a list my freind... let that 1.8T blow then . Who gives a shit right ? :D

What's the best place to buy the pistons and rods ? i am getting very close to start buying for the build.. :)
thinking SCAT rods and JE pistons.

a4wdhybrid
August 27th, 2006, 08:52 PM
scats can be had from boost factory/issam, tomritt, several other places as well

je's are only $459 in that link i posted

rods
pistons
rings
rod bearings
head gasket
head bolts
valve cover gasket
sealant for the oil pan

the following 2 arent needed but might as well...oil pump, chain tensioner gasket set

assembly lube
oil filter
oil
coolant

Ak-Abe
August 27th, 2006, 08:54 PM
which ones should be looked at ? concerning the pistons ?

a4wdhybrid
August 27th, 2006, 08:56 PM
81mm bore

a4wdhybrid
August 27th, 2006, 09:02 PM
cylinder hone as well

the rings can he installed w/ a small screwdriver

ring compressor
head bolt tool

sorry..i keep thinking of more things that you *need* to do the job

TurboMatt
August 28th, 2006, 09:36 AM
i would use studs insted of head bolts:oddeye-hellyeah:

gerich
August 28th, 2006, 10:26 AM
If you are on a limited budget I would just go with oem head bolts since I don't think you will be removing the head very often once you get it all assembled. Just my .02 since you mentioned an engagement ring.

a4wdhybrid
August 28th, 2006, 10:30 AM
i would use studs insted of head bolts:oddeye-hellyeah:
arp studs are prob going to run $100+

head bolts are $2/each

studs are only benefical if you are going to be removing the head several times they also require retightening after a certain amount of miles which equals more work

TurboMatt
August 28th, 2006, 10:42 AM
Just my .02 since you mentioned an engagement ring.
who? its not for me. i'll be doing this some time but not now. i think this is for abe

you mentioned going BT and then made this comment. i think we need to get the old block from Yareka's car out and show you what boost can do to 1.8T block. I wouldn't go BT on a daily without replacing the puny ass rods that come stock.

a4wdhybrid
August 28th, 2006, 03:12 PM
you can cruise the 1.8t forum on vortex and see what boost can do to a 1.8t block

theres usually a weekly "i blew my engine" post

TurboMatt
August 28th, 2006, 05:13 PM
its not my daily. my '73 bmw 2002 or motorcyle (great gas mileage) are the dailies. plus i will be doing this sometime in the next year. when i do the clutch and flywheel. so no worries right now.

Ak-Abe
August 28th, 2006, 06:14 PM
that's good info that's why i should be ordering the Rods in a week or so . :)

TurboMatt
August 28th, 2006, 06:30 PM
as i told everyone at the greensboro meet. i dont plan on dogging it. its just a car i like to drive on the weekends. i dont like driving it back in forth to work. hell i dont even let people ride in the back. which is why im gonna take out the back seats. ive got the ok from diane to do the bottom end work but im gonna wait till i move out because i hate crowding my parents garage with parts (half of the four car garage is filled with my 2002 parts already). i thank everyone for the concern about what may happen to my car, but im gonna take it all apart when i get my garage so diane can bitch at me about all the parts i have all over the place. :smack:

Ak-Abe
August 28th, 2006, 09:30 PM
i am going to order the JE rings too ...

gerich
August 28th, 2006, 10:01 PM
I think not sure but I think JE pistons come with rings.

Ak-Abe
August 28th, 2006, 10:03 PM
well they don't come with the JE pistons but you can order them 4 for like 79 bucks.

Wiseco or JE pistons ??

Ak-Abe
August 28th, 2006, 11:13 PM
gonna be ordering this.
Scat rod with ARP 2000 bolts. Far stronger than stock rods,

another option (that i mentioned last night) is to get the scat rods and have them rebushed for a stock wrist pin size.

a4wdhybrid
September 1st, 2006, 02:47 PM
not going to work

stock rods/pistons are a taper fit

theyd have to be ribushed and machined...$$$$

Ak-Abe

THis is very nice. But since we have met with the boys yesterday night. I am thinking on going all out and building the motor. GOnna buy a block and build it . :smack:
