Check your codes with VAG-COM. You may just need to clear the codes and maybe do a TB alignment.

crank=starter engages flywheel and spins engine
start=the above plus engine fires
Run=above plus engine remains running.
So your engine will crank but not start I think.
where are you located, maybe someone has the Vag-Com action for you.
Camshaft position sensor maybe?
Crank position sensor?
one of those two is my bet. .

hall sensors dont really fail on 1.8t's
possible crank sensor failed but he said the car started, misfired, and then died ..and that it had misfired once before when it was wet outside

Clogged up rain tray flooded with the 6.5" of water we got from the sky this week?
you looked in under the plastic on the rain tray to make sure your not flooded?

I guess it would be all in the floor if it was.

The plastic under the wiper blades cover up the rain tray, that is also where the computer lives, I've seen them flood from leaves and shit clogging up the drains, worse on the passats, but could happen to you, the passat has a comfort control module under the driver's side floor mat, so the rain tray would flood, then it would flood the area under the carpet and flood the CCM and cause all kinds of weirdo stuff to happen.
Check it out!

yeah...well I got the son of a B. started...with the help of starter fluid.....once it got started it was spraying water from the exhaust......So then I checked my dip stick and it had crap on it. So next step would be the Head Gasket.....YEAH?!! thats what i wanna do
