I was looking through the good vortex and found this link which is rather interesting and seems to go against the "grain" in regaurds to the proper way to break in a new engine.
It touches on some very good points. I've always heard that you should break one in the way you intend to drive it. This guys is suggesting but also mentions using good ole dino oil for the break in, instead of synthetic.
here is the link to the article.

Kevin will have to be addressing some of these issues and concerns. I just want to hear others thoughts and opinions.

holyfarkin shit...I was just going to post this up a couple of days ago and I keep forgetting to bring this up with evan and gerch(yes, I said Gerch). This seems to go against the thoughts of a typical breakin, way against. He claims 8-10% more power from this type of break in. I love the part about break-in on the dyno.
Waiting for the experts to chime in:oddeye-hellyeah:
edit: I have heard about break in with dino oil for 500 miles and then changing out to synth. This guys says to run it like hell for 20 miles, then change out to synth.

Speedchannel did an evaluation of this technique and found it no more benficial for daily or race driving than standard break in procedures. They said the guys proof was based on limited examples under certain circumstances. They cited that machine tolerances and technology have exceeded the need to "hone" or "bore" the cylinder walls further by using a hard break in method. You can always tell a car that was driven hard during the break in period - leaking gaskets, burns oil, on cars with under 50K miles. From the video I saw of the Renault formula 1 team testing their new engine on the bench, it underwent a lower than race RPM breakin for many many hours before it was beat on.

we used to argue this all the time back in the day. No one could ever prove one or the other. A lot of people think that the motor will run the way you break it in. If you break it in fast it will run fast. A lot of people think that you need to make sure you use something with a high nickel content for break in oil. I think the bottom line is that if the motor clearances are right then you will survive.

When I got finished putting the Scirocco back together I was real easy for about 4 or 5 miles and then some guy in a turbo beetle wanted to play. How could I resist? heheh.

first 500 miles no WOT/full boost change oil
1000 miles hard accel and decel change oil
If it's running good at 1500 Let her have it
I have always been told to run dino oil on break in and the switch to synthetic after the 1500mile mark. I would also set the boost down to stock levels initially since this is a daily driver I wouldn't try and break it in like a drag/race car. If you do try and break it in like that it could have negative effects on driveability and longevity.

i dont use any synthetics for the first 1K during break in because they have anti wear chemicals in them and you want the motor to BREAK IN. then i change the oil and use synthetics or good quality oil. this more the case on non turbo engines but it depends.
