....on a non-existant budget.....
My sig is about to change when the Pathfinder is sold... so what do I neeeeeed to do on the cheap and easy besides timing belt/etc. Car will be a 2001 1.8T Passat with around 95k on the clock. As for mods, I'll be doing a boost guage, catch can, and some intake polishing first. What's the deal with downpipes, FMIC, CAI, J/h/whatever valves, etc... ??? What are the gains I can see from each or do they add up better together?? Its rolling on steelies and hubcaps so wheels and suspension will be first and considering that I don't have any money I'm not sure how I'll swing it. ha. Any advice or warnings appreciated!

bilstiens...h&r springs...giac chip...exhaust...j valve...bkr7e's

nobody really makes a d/p for the longitudal motors..you can get a test pipe but youd have to rig up something for the rear o2

and a cai on a longitudal car is pretty much nonexistent too..there are intakes but for the $$ id keep the stock airbox

fmic is $$ too unless you go custom then its a lot of work

as far as maintenence goes...expect to do control arms and tie rod ends...timing belt goes w/o saying and depending upon the vin # its either going to be an aug or awm engine code..both have an internal waterpump...and make sure its a car from the south...if not doing suspension work is going to be a pita

Coool. Thanks Ian... and its definitely a southern car. North Florida to be exact. What's up with the control arms? Do they bend? I'm not sure of the engine code yet but it is a early 2001....NOT a 2001.5.

the ball joints on the ends of them are really bad about wearing out...the reason i mentioned the north/south thing is because road salt does terrible things to the fasteners they used on all the suspension parts and makes disassembly a huge pita

01 is an aug engine code

Ian covered most of it. I think techtonics makes a 2.5 downpipe for it. And yes we have GIAC for it. as a matter of fact I think the 01 passat is a pretty sick little (in Garrett's own words) "hammer file".

My scirocco was purchased in Cortland NY in 1988 and had sat on the lot for over a year supposedly because it didn't have a sunroof. I got it in 1990 in Binghamton NY. I drove it for a couple winters and was eventually able to park it for the salty seasons while going to college in Buffalo. I religiously wiped doorjams, under the hood, etc etc etc when I was using it in the winter. It was nothing for me to wash it 3 or 4 times a week. Despite everything I've still got a little body rust problem. I replaced my driver's door a few years ago with a factory painted one which really helped. My mechanics at the time convinced me of the importance of anti-seize compound and I probably wouldn't still have the car if it wasn't for that stuff. Moving back to the South was VERY influenced by my love of cars.

Evan is one of the hammer files with larger injectors? (that would be the for sure way to go IMHO) IIRC the b5s have samller injectors than the mkivs....

add a green top coolant sensor to the list.

1.8t first mods should be downpipe, n75 race valve, chip (im APR but GIAC REVO also rock) New 007 diverter valve. Dont put a blow off valve on it will sound like an SRT-whore, plus you lose performance. Tim has a really cool DV set up check his out. Turbo inlet pipe as well good investment. Now as for a fun all around car and a good ride, upgrade the wheels, OE are heavy, upgrade suspension....Alot of dub guys go bilstein sports with H&R race springs really nice looking stance, if you got more cash go with coils. I would sugest a rear sway bar as well big difference in handling. From my experience those were all must dos and im pretty happy with money spent and how much more fun it is.

no big injector files for the b5 only the b6 or b5 with a k04. Garrett uses the term "hammer" for the big torque files from what I have seen.
