I think the 2.0T has the potential to be a strong ass engine with the extra .2 liters. Also the huge OEM intercooler helps, along with the FSI. However, this does mean a quicker diminishing return. I don't doubt a 2.0T with all available goodies (when somebody makes them in a year or two) will be able to kill the 1.8T's. However, with no extra help from a newer intercooler, fewer valves, it isn't as resticted an engine as the 1.8T was from the factory.

I'd be scared to see somebody do a stoker mod for the 2.0T. I doubt it will happen however since the 2.5L NA engine has 5 cylinders this time instead of 4. Someplace would have to custom make the crank or get creative. The 1.8T stroker mod claims 65bhp on the 2.0L version. Gosh knows what the 2.1L makes. Start with a BT and add that stoker and damn, looking at 400whp. Toss in a little alcohol injection and headwork, I'd say the ultimate realistic limit of the 1.8T is 450whp.

The 2.0T? I can't say yet. I'd assume a BT to put down about 350-360whp. Alcohol and headwork, 400whp. However, with no immediate realistic or easy displacement mods similar to the stroker, I don't forsee it catching a 2.1L stroked 1.8T. Thus the ultimate deciding factor will be if the 2.0T comes out with a stroker as well. If it does, Game Over for the 1.8T guys. If it doesn't, the 1.8T will live another day.

I am a 1.8T guy. And still believe it can hold it's water against a 2.0T despite the extra .2 liters displacement.

I meant the 450whp. It's been done and then some and I think that was with a stock displacement 1.8t.Billy1.8T made 491 IIRC. That and FSI is a big factor making them a different animal. Both motors are awesome but it seems like an apples and oranges comparison.

A 1.8 may keep up on hp but will get RIPPED on the torque curve. The chipped 2.0t has more torque then most any 1.8t. Even big turbo. For performance the 2.0t will soon be king. Not to say the 1.8t isn't a great motor that has become very affordabe to build but the 2.0t has technology the 1.8t never will.

I chipped a pack of 2.0Ts . Along with a bunch of stage 2 1.8ts. The DSG 2.0ts where getting pulled on, the MT6 2.0ts with just a chip were only getting slightly inched on. Moral of the story a chipped 2.0t will hold it's own against a heavily modded stock 1.8t.

The 2.0t is untapped yet in alot of aspects. I believe it has more potential based on the technology and extra displacement. There are a couple of 650-750hp 1.8ts but they are all just engines on an engine dyno, no real in vechile testing. Look at how the FSI technology is being used in the rs4 to achieve stellar results.

It takes to the old adage no replacement for displacement.

I'm not trying to ruffle any feathers or knocking the 1.8Ts or any other car for that matter...I was just showing some love for my car..that's all since I'm one of the few that have one on here. :)
The 2.0T is an awesome engine from what I know through my own experience owning it and it's my first VW so I'm not talking crap about the ones I've never driven/owned before.

No feathers ruffled here. I'm very impressed with the 2.0t. The 1.8t has been around for about a decade now, and it really hasn't achieved all that much. Lack of tuning support,products and stock management has put kinks in alot of development for performance products.

I believe the 2.0t has the industry support and potential to make insane hp numbers in half the time it's taken to achieve them with a 1.8t.

I've seriously considered it before. Only thing holding me back is the looks of a MkV haven't grown on me yet. Same as the newest gen BMW's. Took me a while, but I came around to the new looks.

Anyone know why a 16 valve this time instead of 20? I'm assuming cost/benefit. Cause they coulda transfered some parts over.

From what i have heard they found no great improvement with the extra valve and the cost as you stated were the reasons. Not to mention adding the injector into the combustion chamber takes up some room. This adds some complexity to the head design as fuel mixture/atomization is different than standard port injection.

No doubt about it, 2.0t will reign on any 1.8t parade given similar mods. Thats just evolution, kinda like the 1.8t>vr6>2.0(oh no he didnt):D

Seems like a higher percentage of 2.0t are coming with DSG, I wonder how much this will keep the market from growing. You can only throw so much power to it, just like the 1.8t tiptronic.
