I have a bentley I can send with Eric next thursday for reference ( I have to work ) and we can see what we can do to get ya going. Seriously though a bentley manual is probably the best thing you can buy with these cars. It's invaluable and a well spent $45 on your car if you buy a brand new one off ebay.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/VW-Cabriolet-Scirocco-NEW-Bentley-Printed-Manual_W0QQitemZ310034227036QQcmdZViewItem?hash=it em310034227036
If you turned the distributor 180 once and couldnt get going,
and turned it another 180 and still no go,
Then if you turn it 180 a third time, in theory that should get you back where you started from and the car should at least start.
However, having messed with it you will probably need that timing light to get it back to where it should be. (unfortunately I dont have a timing light)
When it was looked at last thursday night, it seemed to be an issue with the car getting air in that is causing your problems not the timing. Did you get a chance to check the cold start valve?

5-3.2 - removing and installing distributor
- hand turn the crankshaft in its direction of normal rotation until the no 1 cylinder is in position to fire and the top dead center mark is next to the pointer. the pointer is inside the timing check hole
- make sure that the distributor housing's mounting flange and washer are firmply seated agains the engine block and that the rotor tip is aligned with the no. 1 cylinder mark on teh distributor housing
- loosely install the hold down clamp and the hold down bolt. reconnect the wiring and the hoses to the distributor
- install the distributor cap. adjust ignition timing for distributors without braker points as described in 4.4 adjusting timing then torque hold down bolt to 15 ft-lb
5-4.4
- remove plastic plug from timing check hole (should already be done)
- connect a tachometer then follow instrument manufacturer's instructins, install a stroboscopic timing light
- start the engine and allow it to warm up until the oil temperature is at least 80C, 176F. if the idle speed is not between 850 and 1000rpm, adjust idle as described in fuel and exhaust systems
- on engines with digital idle stabilizers, stop the engine, then detach both plugs from the digital idle stabilizer and connect the plugs together as indicated in 4-8 (pic)
- start the engine and allow it to idle. then check idle speed. should be b/w ~850 and ~1000
- aim timing light at the timing check hole in the bellhousing (where the plug used to be). illuminated by the timing light, the timing mark should appear stationary adjacent to the pointer in the hole.
(my bentley does not cover cabriolet that late..)
- if the timing mark is not correctly aligned with the pointer, loosen the ignition distributor hold down bolt. then with the engine idling between 800 and 1000 rpm hand turn the distributor housing clockwise or counterclockwise until the mark is aligned with the pointer.
- where applicable, reconnect the vacuum retard hose. idle speed should drop by about 200rpm
- stop the engine on engines with digital idle stabilizers, disconnect plugs and reconnect the to the digital idle stabilizer.
- on engines with digital idle stabilizers, restart the engine. accelerate it to about 2k rpm and then allow the engine to return to an idle. with the digital ISV connected, the rpm should stabilize between ~850 and ~1000 rpm
- if necessary, stop the engine. then disconnect the tachometer (if necessary) and timing light.

just to help out the timing hole (top dead center) is in the green looking plug on the tranny-mine is green cause of the head gasket blowing coolant all over my engine bay.

that looks like one of the plugs to keep the engine warm when it is freezing cold out. alot of northern cars have them for winter

From the pics it seems like it could still be a ignition problem. Did you set the timing according to the directions 5-3.2 - removing and installing distributor? You may want to buy a new set of spark plugs or try to clean and re-gap the pulgs. You may be having a problem with your ignition coil, check the connections on it to make sure there is no corrision on the terminals.

i think the problem still there im going to see about if tom will take a look at it soon. i got all the points aligned and the car started but this morning it started but it still feels like is missing could it the coil? i have spark and i compression and fuel i will mess with it some more and take it to toms house...
pinky
March 25th, 2008, 03:33 PM
could be a lot of things... there's a procedure in the bentley for checking the coil.. you'll need a multimeter.. could also be just about any part of the fuel and/or ignition system.
that narrows it down, huh?
hey, at least its not digi2...
