I went and picked it up today, a 1989 Alpine white Jetta Diesel.
It will replace the Mustang as a daily driver, with twice the gas mileage. (hopefully)
I would have pics posted but for some reason my Photobucket account is acting up.
142K, 5 Speed, AC car That I picked up for a really good bargain, and came with some accessories in the trunk as well.:laff:
As soon as photobucket lets me log in I will have pics posted. Now I am in the market for a bentley, a new coolant hose that come from the flange on the head to the water pump. And maybe some help trying to figure this thing out, since I have never had a diesel car before. Lastly, later on I hope to convert it to a veggie oil car and save some money on fuel prices...
!!!Edit for PICS!!!

Chris,
This one was not on craigslist , I bought it from a friend that lost interest because of the body damage and a blown coolant hose.
Pinky,
Ill take that fender, you would not happen to have a hood and drivers fender in alpine white a well? :D
The passenger headlight moves back n fourth if you push on the outside edge (near the fender) so I do not know what is broke or if the rad support is crushed...But I will be by later on to get a oil filter if you have it.

April 30th, 2008, 02:16 PM
probably a plastic clip or something on the headlight.. mine broke, thats why i bought the other set. there may be some pieces you can use on it
no right fender or hood... i just got the left fender because that one was damaged on my mk2 (it came with the car).. i kept hte dented one on there because it was red.

Replaced vaccum lines, changed the oil, bled the air out of the fuel system, drained the oil/water seperator, cleaned out the coolant tank, replaced busted coolant hose, filled with new coolant and got it running. Then Susan and I took it around the block :upyeah:
Big thanks to Gerich and Niel at Apex for the prompt parts service and taking the time (patience) to explain the intricacies of the MK2 to a new Dub owner.:)
Now I finally got to find out about the 5th gear issue. When I put in in 5th and let of the clutch , it acts likethere is no engagement. So either 5th gear is toast and needs to be replaced, the linkage is out of adjustment, or the shifter box needs to be rebuilt..
This new Bently is awesome, the only thing I have ever seen close to the amount of information for a vehicle is the actual service manuals from Ford/Mercury for the other projects I have.

Congrats on finding such an Excellent Car !! !! !!
Thought I was about the luckiest guy in the world when I found the twin to yours, about a week before you got yours. Looks like we both get those honors.
I just joined this Forum by reference from VWVortex. Last thing I expected was to find another new VW owner with an identical car that they had just bought as well.
Pretty Cool to me.
They probably both came from Wolfsburg on the same shipment. They seem to be practically identical down to the a/c radio and rear de-icer options. Same colors, same wheels. I also have PwrStr and couldn't tell if you have a reservoir in your pix. Also have what might be factory cruise control, or aftermarket with a factory looking stalk. Its missing the throttle cable. Hope to get it working.
These little freight-trains impress the heck out of me.
When I get some updated software I'll start a thread and post some pix next week.
Nice to find you guys.

I have not been on the forums, went out of town this weekend for my Sister-in-law's graduation at Apl state.
Before we left last week I replaced the Fuel filter just so I don't have to worry about that later on.
When I picked up the filter from Apex I ordered the shifter bushing kit. Hopefully after replacing the bushings and readjusting the shifter I will have 5th gear back. I still need to get a 17 mm hex socket so I can remove the plug and check it.
Thanks for all the comments:upyeah:
I still need to take the pics of the vaccum lines, before/after and post them up.
Probably get the jetta legal tomorrow and drop by the shop for a bit.
Much appreciated for the comments BVZ, interesting find they are, I am looking into converting this to a WVO car as soon as possible as gas prices are making the $4.00 mark. I paid $3.75/gal in Boone on the return trip home.
Parts I am need for now are:
Washer fluid resevoir
cold air intake tube from passenger fender to filter housing
and a aero rad support (for now)
Plans are to install a Westy front with eyelid spoiler, and euro small front/rear bumpers.
Radio might be for sale, works fine, but would rather trade for parts . I think I even have the code for it.

okay let me give eastep some recognition here - thanx for the referal man :thumbs up: and also a fellow from here named Dirt Ghost.
This is my first VW. I was going to take the Diesel plunge after Katrina - but stalled. Big mistake in waiting but at least I got a great deal on a great VW (like Couga) when I did finally decide to get one.
The white Diesel Jetta on craigslist was an 85 model. I talked to the man when he originally listed it, but passed. He was a veteran VW diesel driver and had bought a newer late model Jetta Diesel. It (85) was bought fairly quickly, and relisted/flipped by the next buyer - at a higher price. I had been studying these vehicles for a while and checking on a lot of them by phone and email and in person.
Couga, I'm going to be running some alternate fuels also eventually.
I bought some Snowflake rims from a pretty cool VW guy named Ed over towards Hillsborough. Will be changing exterior color to 3 stage dark blue met, or 2 stage Black. I want a 1985-86-87 factory Jetta Front Grill to switch the look a little. Doesn't sound like our cars will be mirror imaging too much longer !!
I'm touring boneyards around Piedmont area. I'll try to help you on some parts too. I'd like to have the fascia/bezel around your radio - or if anyone has one like it spare. My radio was probably "swapped back in" before selling I'm guessing - and they discarded that bezel. Keep me up on your radio list too.
The cold air intake hose seems like it was two pieces. An inner flex hose, with an outer thermal shield/silencer hose, from other pix I've seen. Anyway I need to make one too, and will share ideas or findings with you.
Parts houses here haven't had much to offer. Need some round, two and a half inch diameter with around 15-18 inch length for the flex hose. Thermal part should be easier to source, from alternate resources.
I'm doing some bodywork on mine first, in spare time. It goes to daily driver duty asap after priming. I tested it for about 100 miles and it left one small drip in my drive (pwr str) and used less than 1/8 tank. Must be slow coming off the full mark.
Then tore into stripping the roof, both quarters, and trunklid, down to the metal.
Need:
radio surround bezel and volume knob for factory radio like Couga's pic
drip molding weatherstrips for both sides of 85-92 4 door Jetta
stock grill from a 1985-86-87 Jetta
cold air intake hose set up for non turbo DZL

Titled and tagged.
Degreased the engine compartment, man this thing had grease/oil everywhere.....
I shifted the transmission in 5th manually under the hood and 5th gear is gone. The noise that I hear when letting off the clutch has to be 5th gear peices floating around...
1-4 shift fine, no grind nothing, maybe replacing 5th gear would do it , but I'm still looking into replacing the transmission. Also replaced a few bushings for the shift linkage, (that is the reason on deciding to degrease the engine bay) will finish the rest tomorrow as Susan cleans the interior.
Frank gave me the cover that is under the dash since mine was broke and other than the torn shift boot and e-brake boot the interior looks good.
Also after driving it for a little bit , I am going to pull the front wheels and check the brakes. There seems to be a nasty grinding noise from the passenger front.
More later.

Wraith,
I'll take it.
PM sent.
I have never seen this before but the headgasket seeps oil.... I also need a piece that is beside the fuel filter on the inner fender. The vaccum line that comes off the fuel pump on the engine goes to it. Someone cut the electric wires to it.
Also , for some reason my turnsignal led in the dash is barely lit when I turn the ignition on. Can this be caused by a bulb being out? I'm hoping that there isn't a short, I hate electrical gremlins. As for now it does not affect the turnsignals or 4 way flashers at all, it just is barely lit.
So far the list of parts I have decided to replace is:
New Sach's clutch kit
New brake pads for front
Possibly replacing both front brake rotors. I have not yet checked the calipers.
New brake shoes for rear
New belts
and I have to find out which motor mount/trans mount is bad, if I change gears a little fast I can feel movement in the front and an audible bump.

Well I just picked up the O20 trans and Diesel 5th gear from Wraith.
Aweomse guy, only got to talk briefly because I had to rush to work. I also saw what he purchased to replace the Jetta Coupe with , and I am sworn to secrecy.
If you want to know, you will either have to ask him, or wait untill it's debut.
Damn, I can't remember the trans code , but I will be ordering the new sach's clutch kit tomorrow and hopefully get this thing moving by the weekend.
So new trans/ new clutch/ gear oil, and new shift bushings, this should be good to go.
Thanks again Jon for bringing the trans out to me. If I can help with the new project let me know and Ill be glad to help.

Rock On Couga. Car is worthy of anything it needs.
I'm going to have to rebuild my shifter too. Its loose as a goose.
Glad all you guys are so familiar with them already - I might need a tip or two.
I'm getting very few hours in on mine the past week. If i get chance to mask it off and put both quarters in full primer by Sunday I'll be happy.
Bought a passenger side seat with great support cushions top and bottom. Plan to switch them into my drivers side seat, sometime...
Found some great looking Audi leather seats, but the track rails on their seat frames will have to be moved in so much I'd have to take the seats completely apart to be able to properly do the mods without ruining them. So I passed. Maybe next year ... or the next after that.
I'm going to PM you my build date and last several digits of my VIN - lets see how close they were actually built in Wolfsburg.
Some of those OD's had as much as 0.75 - A 10spd tranny would be cool - lol.

Trans code is AUG.
Shifter rebuild isn't tough but is a little more difficult if you don't drop the exhaust and pull the shift box, it is one of the best maintenance items you can do on the MKII, it really makes it a lot easier to drive.

Update,
Upgraded brakes to vented rotors and semi metallic brake pads on the front.
I will drop off the flywheel off to the machine shop tomorrow. While I am waiting for the flywheel to be resurfaced, I will rebuild the shift linkage. I will probably take my time and do a DIY and post in the MKII Forum.
I am also in need for the Phillips head screw that attatched the rotor to the hub. Previous owner broke it off and I had to remove the leftover piece.
Thanks again to Apex Tuning for the prompt parts service and answering the many questions of a MKII newbie.

If you can post a picture of the screw/location, I'm going to a Yard tomorrow. They have an 88 Golf and 92 Jetta - one of them should have the screw you need. I hate getting incorrect parts - especially for someone else, some years have a little bit different sh!t from others sometimes.
This 92 just came in. Its a White 4door with grey interior. 8V gas Automatic. Some of the things you wanted previously might be good on this one. Hood looks good for a driver, not completely perfect. Nice paint, few small dings, one womble impression/dent. Fenders are nice, nice paint, Non-Wolf.
Big Bumpers with flares and lower ground effects, thin body moldings. Missing 3 of the 4 jackflaps and miscellaneous small damages here and there to the plastics.
I got all the seats (woooooo yeh! nice upgrade!), VW rubber floormats, decklid, drip molds, tailite, jack, and some other small stuff. Someone else got the tranny. Was a pretty nice Car.
Draw up another list if you need anything. And maybe answer the PM I sent you a while back too.

So tomorrow I go and drop the flywheel so it can be resurfaced. Then I will start on rebuilding the shift linkage.
That's an awesome find on the Jetta, Pinky has a Passenger front fender in Alpine white that I need to pick up. Find out how much they want for the Drivers front fender as well as the front valence that is under the bumper if it is in good shape. I'm hoping to find a hood with as least dents/waves as possible, I dont care for the color of that because I will primer it black anyways. Are they big doors are small? When you go check on the passenger front for me if you would. Thin Molding might be on the ticket as well.
Lets see about a list of what im looking for:
Driver's front fender -AW if possible
possible passenger front door-AW if possible
front valence -AW if possible
Hood
Hood prop rod holding piece
Washer fliud resevoir
Missing powersteering Nut
PM replied,
That is all I can think of now- will post if I need anything more later

If there is a rotor screw left on one I'll get it for you.
I don't remember if the 92 had PS. Will check for that piece. And get it if it has it.
I'll try to get better feel for where that electric gizmo is by checking mine. And will see if there is one, on those two 8V cars in the yard.
Everybody needs a hood prop clip. I found a place that has them new for 50 cents. A Vortex customer was going to order some stuff from them - and get me and him a couple of the clips. Still not seen them.
Doors - they are the same as my/your 89. Little-Big idunno. All the doors are real nice on the 92. But the black-out tape on exterior center door posts has a different pattern than my 89. Mine has a fine grain - these have small squares like a faux carbon fibre look. Might make a difference to you.
This car has been repainted once. It also has the thinner mid section side moldings - along with the big bumpers - the flares - and the bottom rocker skirts. They didn't disassemble and do a European quality refinish.
So the fender will have a paint edge where flare is when flare is removed. And paint won't be smooth under where big bumper covers it low up front, will be overspray probably. Our bumpers won't cover that area. So this wouldn't be a completely No-Touch fender for you. Might make a difference.
I'll confirm quality of passenger front door, driver fender, and front valance.
If yours has CE2 style dash cluster (no upshift light between speedo&clock) and height adjustable front seatbelts on the center posts/pillars - then our Cars were built Completely Identical all the way.

I'm twitching and itching for the flares Wraith ! lol
Don't throw them out PLEASE. I want them if you can box them and ship.
Or let Couga hold them for me if you have to get them out of your way.

Thanks BVZ
If you car has the solid rotors, when/if you do the front brakes get the vented/slotted rotors and matching brake pads. You don't have to replace the caliper as they are the same. Just a small upgrade , but well worth it. I bought Semi-Mettalic pads for a little more stopping power and longevity.
Thanks to Gerich and Neil at Apex for the info.

Went by Apex Tuning and picked up these:

Much appreciated Gerich.:upyeah:
Then dropped the flywheel off at T-Hoff for resurfacing. Might have it back today I was told, but most likely tomorrow. Being 100 degrees outside I am not working on the car even if it is under the shade.

yeh, OucH ! I had to delay my plans on Jyarding until tomorrow - its just too damn HOT.
If you think you might want to convert to the thin moldings, might be best to just buy all 4 doors. Then all the blackout tape will match too. I'll scope them all over and get my price for the whole set.

Couga, went Jyarding today. Got you the long PS bolt and nut. And a rotor screw. No charge.
Looked at the elctro-gizmo on my Car to get familiar with it and location. It is complete/intact.
But neither of the two 8V's or the 16V use this item. Whatever it is. Probably Diesel Only.
Pass Front Door is nice and totally solid all around. Factory tint glass - manual crank. Has about 4-5 small dings. Nice paint. However, this is a 92 and has the seatbelt latch up on the door. Will leave holes when you remove it. Some rubber/plastic plugs might get by on that.
Driver Fender is nice and solid. Nice paint. Has one small crease/dent up in front of side marker. Most of it would push out from backside after its pulled off and be almost un-noticable. Paint didn't really look bad at all behind part that is concealed by big bumper. Again, this is a flare & skirt big bump car, less exposure areas from our cars.
I don't guess big bumper cars used a metal front valance. This one didn't. Can get one off an 88 Golf that needs a little massaging back into shape. No creases in metal, just disfigured a little. Saw a new one on eBay for like 20-25 plus 20 shipping, made in Italy.
If something doesn't work out on the washer bottle with Wraith, this one is perfect and full of blue fluid.
Whole car is/was really pretty nice. The condition of the lower plastic skirts are the only weak point on the whole car.
If any of this stuff strikes interest let me know. Prices are low to me, but not free. except for bolt/nut & screw. lol
PM me the address where you want me to mail the hardware.

Finally got my camera to cooperate with my computer. Here are a few pix of that gizmo.
It's an auto altitude adjuster for the injection pump. Altitude Control Aneroid of all things.
It has a hose coming off the bottom, I put a golf tee in it to plug it off. Now that I know sort of what it is - I'll probably check to see if it runs better with or without the golf tee. It might need to be open.
Still holding those bolts etc...

That's it!
Mine is fine except the wiring that goes to the top piece, that curves around to the lower connector.
I dont think it needs to be blocked off, I would remove the Tee. Also looking at the pics, go to the auto store and get 4-5 ft of vac tubing and replace the one going off the top to the engine. Also the small ones going across the top of the injection pump. After replacing them it ran alot better. I have some leftover tubing and I plan on replacing the ones that go from glowplug to glowplug after the trans is in.
As far as an update, I have cleaned and rebuilt the shift mechanism- least the part with the huge bushig that you have to drill out the rivets to get to. I was told you could put it back together with small nuts/bolts but I didn't like the way it looked when I saw on the forums. Also, it did not look like it was put together correct as the nut must have come loose and allowed the plate to shift- making a little more play. So I got a rivet gun and riveted it back together, and if I say so - looks great. I also used white lithium grease for the bushings.
I have to remove the piece on the trans and install the two other small bushings. But I am left with 2 of the same type of white bushings that go on the shaft with the ball. I have no clue where they go , unless I have to remove the shifterbox and put them in there.
I have pics while I was rebuilding the shift mechanism, and I will post a DIY in the MKII forums soon for the community. Tomorrow plans are to put the transmission in, and borrow the tool to center the shifter and I should be set. Believe me , I am ready to drive this thing....

I definitely want to put all new vac hoses. Keep forgetting to check for reasonable source of original type tubing with that weave on it. I like how it looks, if it isn't sky high priced.
You're really moving ahead on yours and getting it done. Keep up the great work !
Post the DIY soon as possible. I have had the kit for almost 2 months and hopefully will try mine in a week or so. Bought a Haynes repair manual a while back for 99cents plus $5 shipping, and that might have been overpriced. Nothing about shifter rebuild. Does the Bentley cover it ? So I need a rivet gun and an alignment tool, so far.
I've had my VW for about 2 months now, sitting in driveway. Ran and drove great, just needed heavy attention to re-doing some aged out collision repaired bodywork. And an exh pipe weld in front of muffler / shifter rebuild. Time was slim and progress slow for a while. Got other things caught up and starting getting more time on VW. Passenger quarter was worst item, tackled it first. Worked the metal out way better than they had before. Might have 3-4 ounces of bondo in it where they had used about half a gallon. 2 coats of self etching zinc catalyzed primer, 3 coats of epoxy primer, gave that a few days to cure good and then 3 coats of semigloss white color coat for a blend-in look to get by with for a while. That one is buttoned up.
Was going to knock out the driver quarter this past weekend. But forgot it was Fathers day weekend. My Dad made a strong request that I come to his place at High Rock lake Saturday for Fathers Day get together. Wound up with my left elbow and shoulder almost dislocated from a tubing accident there. Shoulder is better, elbow still healing - slowly. Haven't done anything noteworthy since Saturday, car or otherwise. Sucks really really bad.
Roof will just get a quick temporary going over since time is marching right by me. Don't have to fool with old trunklid now since I got a great used one the same color from that 92 in the yard.
Found German buildsheet tucked in the frame of the bottom of original lower rear seat cushion when I changed out all the seats last week.
I know exactly how you feel, everyday I say DAMN I NEED TO BE DRIVING THIS CAR !!

Since I'm doing nothing and it was on my mind - I checked around on some of the VW parts links for that hose. It was too pricey, and/or too much quanity.
Went to eBay. Your friends at T.Hoff have it and price is right ! About same as what I pay for standard vacuum hose around here. $1.25 per foot for the German weaved vacuum hose. $2.25 per foot for the German weaved Yellow Stripe Diesel Rated hose for the Injectors. Shipping is just a few bucks by postal service and they combine stuff. I'm going to order up some tonight from them.

Wow, didn't know T-Hoff carried it, I will see how the regular vac hose does for now, if it gives problems I'll go get a roll.
Thanks for the heads up, btw: Pt1 of the DIY is up on the MKII forum.

T-HOFF offers the hose in 3 feet sections on eBay. If you're lucky enough to have local access they probably would sell any length you wanted.
Measured my primary vac hoses and 3 feet is fine. Checked my injector hoses and they have the yellow stripe. So I got a 3ft. section of the yellow stripe too. With shipping (3.25) came to 13.70 total. I'm happy, and keeping it Factory.... wooooo yeh baby ! lol

Couga I sure hope this ISN'T your car listed on craigslist. Its in Cary.
"I have a great 1989 VW Jetta Diesel 5sp that is in amazing condition for it's age....I was driving it & getting ~45-50mpg until 1 week ago when the timing belt broke :-(
That is the bad. The good is that it has 126k original miles, michelins with about 70% tread, working 134 a/c that blows cold, AM/FM/10 CD stereo, absolutely no rust, all new hoses, amazingly, no cracks in the dash, perfect headliner, no rips/tears in the seats. Brakes work perfectly, & car has recently had struts replaced & drives perfectly straight. ...."

Nope, not mine. I saw that on craigslist last night as well.
But it has me thinking of replacing the timing belt/tensioner soon. So I will be in the market for the tools and the timing belt and tensioner as well.... LOL
It never stops...... and I thought working on the musclecar was bad. Least it's maintenance and not because it broke..

::Update::
Ok,
I have replaced:
All engine/transmission mounts "new"
new clutch cable w/ end connector kit.
New cv axles.
Now I have come across that the new clutch cable adjustment is about 3/4 of the way out. Where as the old one was almost to the very end and still had slack enough to lift the cable a lil bit at the transmisson.
Now I have used the thicker rubber mount on the clutch lever on the trans. I know there is no way I installed the clutch backwards... is this a common problem with MKII's?
I will finish the 2nd part of the shift linkage rebuild shortly - I just have needed to get this thing where Susan can drive it safely to work.
