well i've decided two things about the Jetta, since I'm not buying that 240SX, since my retard old person neighbor wants 4 grand for it.

1) Next step is exhaust
2) I'll be damned if I'm paying 600+ for a cat-back single exhaust

I don't get it, but you can't get an exhaust for a 2.5 jetta cheaper than 600 bucks anywhere. I don't get it. A cat-back for a Mazda 3s, for instance, will run you about 325. A Rabbit you can get one for 400, which is reasonable. Neuspeed wants 900 for a 2.5" stainless catback. No. I am not paying nearly a grand for negligible gains.

as some of you know right now i just have a hacked-up stock exhaust and it's less than ideal. It sounds ok when you are REALLY getting on it but it resonates like a (*&_ on the highway, it's still stock diameter, and it's completely quiet at idle - i sort of want to hear the engine.

So here's what I'm thinking - custom exhaust. i want to go with a 2.5" so i don't lose a ton of backpressure (I like my low-end torque) with a single muffler, no resonators.

some questions.

1) Any recommendations for shops?
2) any guesses how much this would cost? Would it probably wind up being more than an off-the-shelf deal?
3) think it would sound good? i've never heard a clip of one, I just want to do this.
4) What muffler? I don't want it to drone on the highway as I love roadtrips, but i want it to bark when i stomp on it.

any tips? Recommendations? Advice?

Thanks!

-James

it really depends on what you are looking at

if you want something mandrel bent, stainless steel, etc... of course it is going to cost you a good deal more

there is a guy in raleigh that has done tim and jason's cars with this type of work and does phenomenal work apparently

if you just want a regular crush bend aluminized run-of-the-mill exhaust, most any exhaust shop can do that no problem.. just select the muffler you want to put on and let them take care of the rest

would that be worth spending the money on, though, is the question.

only if you like seeing shiny things for the 10 hours/ year you are under the car ;)

its harder to see the greasy bits when you keep them facing the ground.

wait, you haven't actually FLIPPED a car yet, have you? new goal!

edit: will you get significantly more power/ better sound out of mandrel-bent? considering the extra cost?

Many shops can only crush bend up to 2.25" so buying a prebuilt system has advantages, check out Eurosport and Autotech in Aluminized, also TT I had their 2.25" with only the rear muffler Borla on a 2.0 ABA and it sounded nice. Good luck

HAHAHAHA!!! I read that as Mexican Muffler!!! LOL

http://www.hottexhaust.com/detail.asp?PRODUCT_ID=16692 -- It's a 3" catback for $550.

If you're just looking for growl, you could just go with muffler. You're performance gains would be pretty minimal at best. (+2-3hp). Scour around the local muffler shops. Some of them do have manrdel bending machines and can custom fabricate for you. As for backpressure, you'd be getting more with a 3" that when you had the open pipe.
